Windscreen replacement

My first post here so be gentle

Cracked my windscreen on my ND (2017) RF MX5 in mid July and one month on I am still waiting for Autoglass to come up with a replacement. Ok, no big deal as there are numerous variations depending on add ons (lane change, rain sensors etc).  What was interesting for this ND model was the fact that Autoglass had to order colour coordinated “trims” which surround the windscreen. Apparently they can not remove the existing ones without breaking them and they cost around £500! . Talk about over engineering a car with all the hidden costs! Autoglass can not replace it at my home either and instead it has to be booked into a specialist garage for half a day (when they eventually get one in stock)!

Is this common knowledge?

Yes, see my post earlier on this forum. It’s a crazy system that doesn’t allow the surrounds to be removed without breaking them. Luckily MX5 parts had my silver surrounds in stock.

The more I here of ND “quirks” (active bonnet etc) the more put-off I am in becoming an owner of one. My original plan was to replace my current NC3.5 with a new ND in about three years time, it now looks as though that will not now happen.

Just a quick update.

Autoglass finally replaced the windscreen (2 months after reporting it). They did a good job however I asked the fitter how much will it all cost. He estimated:

£500 for the trim

£1000 odd for the windscreen

£250 for the calibration (sensors in the screen)

So £1750!!

He said it was all covered by the windscreen excess and there should be no impact on the NCB.  We shall see!

Yes it’s a stupid design. Methinks he is exaggerating the costs somewhat, pillar trim set (as they are called) is £207 from MX-5 Parts.

I don’t believe £1K for the screen either and as for £250 for calibration somebody is very much taking the p***

Near side trim fell off today!  So much for the good repair by Autoglass

Autoglass are going to make a mobile visit … again on Sunday and have ordered another set of trims!

Only sticky back pads were holding the trim on so I guess they never engaged the lugs properly.

Yeep its a bad design and yeep someone is taking the p*** out of me!

Wonder if Mazda gets to hear about these design cock ups???

If a cars windscreen has damage contained within the “swept” area, or whatever section of the windscreen is deemed to be above a certain size, it’s a MOT failure. How do you stand, driving a car with such damage while awaiting repairs (in this case 2 months) is it illegal?  and if so, would insurers provide a replacement vehicle until repaired? Is this going to affect the windscreen excess on policies in the future as windscreen replacement become very expensive and subsequently NCB’s may be lost too. I appreciate OP’s damage may not have been within these areas, just musing.

If the trims fell off it could be that they didn’t replace the original ones and just relied on the sticky pads to hold it on. I’ve heard other reports of this happening. The windscreens seem to crack very easily, could it be another case of weight saving?
