I’m trying to rebuild my wing mirror after it snapped off and I’ve bought the spring and nut/bolt kit but, I need the square ‘washer’ that fits in the top half of the mirror and also the dome piece that fits in the lower mount.
I’ve tried the suppliers and all they seem to do is either the kit I have or, complete units.
Any suggestions or does anyone have any spare bits?
You will have to try one of the breakers that deal with MX5’s. That where I got the 2 dome bits that I needed. The yard had a number of doors wirh the mirror broken off and the dome bit was still attached.
In my own case the square washers cleaned up well enough to re-use, sure they’re not the most regular looking sided square but they did the job, it’s likely yours will be the same inspite of appearances.
As to the domes- what fun they are
I’m afraid it’s several years ago now since I did them, but I think this was how I got mine out eventually and I know once I’d learnt how to do the first, the second mirrors’ dome was easier:
Jam them into a small enough socket so the lumpy part sticks out, and whack it with a hammer, or with the socket on a handle, against solid concrete driveway.
Yes it then jams inside the socket, but a narrow screwdriver from the other side of the socket releases it.
Then you can wonder how a bit of metal manages to weld itself with rust to plastic so efficiently
In fact I just saw Mazda Menders’ link and even though I hadn’t seen the guide before, sounds like my method is what it describes.
I’d also reckon that a dab of super glue will fix the cracked outer piece, in case you didn’t know that’s three pieces you have there, the metal thread, the plastic dome, and the outer (now cracked) retainer.
It probably would be easier now to just go ahead and contact autolink, the mx-5 restorer and the other companies out there that have parts as @NM1 suggested.
The worst part of it is you still have the other mirror to do as well I presume? (because if one falls off, in my experience at least, the second is soon to follow).
No one seems to be able with the parts needed.
I think I’m just going to have to quickly buy the first one I can get my hands on and then try and find one that’s damaged that I can scavenge for parts and then rebuild mine?
I’m always willing to adapt if I can.
How about these below, a little surgery to make a dome for your mirror. Various sizes available, not sure if there’s a size to suit there.
