Winter tyre options on Mk4 ND

I have a 2017 MX5 1.5 ND RF… looking into getting getting some winter tyres soon.

Current wheels are 16” stock with 195/50/R16 tyres

This is my daily and don’t have access to any other car so what ever weather is thrown against me I’ll have to deal with it…

Would preferably like to buy a set of steel rims and get some winter tyres to match… but if there’s nothing that matches the PCD size I’ll put winter tyres on current set and have some new alloys and tyres for the rest of the year.

Any thoughts or folk that’s been there done that…

Are all seasons a consideration? Michelin Cross Climate 2 is available in your size but it’s not a cheap tyre, there’s also Vredestein Quatrac.

Have a look on www.mytyres.co.uk they have a winter wheel and tyre selector for packages.

To be honest I rather try and get a set of steel wheels and get the winter tyres to fit those… I do prefer the 16” ones…

I’ve used winter tyres on various daily drivers(hatches, hot and warm , small SUVs ) for over 30 years , as I lived up a steep single track Moors road . I have used premium Michelin , Vredestein etc but lots of cheaper brands too. Unlike with summer tyres , I have found precious little difference between any of them , and they all work SO much better in ice/snow./mud /puddles than summers. Up to you , but my advice is to try something affordable and don’t feel pressured into buying top end stuff . I claim no special expertise or authority on tyres but I have been using winters decades before they became widely adopted

Mine’s an everyday driver too. I put Michelin CrossClimate 2 on mine last year and havent had any steering or back slide issues with them, i do check the pressure regularly and they do seem to lose a small amount of pressure. Not enough to concern me.

I haven’t driven in deep snow yet, jot had any issues in the wet.

I guess tyres are tyres then… pricing up steel rims and winter is not cheap also not exactly got anywhere to keep them… looks like it’s going to be an all season tyre instead… when these have worn out I ‘ll get me a set… any recommendations on cheaper ones?
