I’m pleased with the performance of my winter tyres (Uniroyal MS plus 66), but I sometimes get a smell of burning rubber, which seems worse when ambient temp over 7 degC. The tyres do not feel warm and are at 29 psi. The smell is more noticeable after my 7 mile drive home, as I park up in my garage and appears stronger at the back. This is after slow parking manoeuvre and definitely no handbrake turns or tyre burning doughnuts. I can’t see.anything stuck under my car or on the exhaust.
I noticed it last winter when I first put the winter tyres on, but it was only occasionally and the smell went when I put my summer tyres back on. Has anybody else noticed a similar smell with their winter tyres?
I have been putting winter tyres on may cars since my first Golf GTI in winter 1981. That is 31 winters as one in the 90’s was quite warm and I guess over ten sets of rims and tyres.
I have never had that smell even the year I run them all year on the Impreza.
I agree I’ve had the smell of hot rubber once or twice last year on winter tyres on mild days in winter although to be honest I’ve not noticed it this winter and I’ve a little more power than I had last year.
My tyres smell like they’ve been on a drift day, if I push them a little. Despite their speed rating. I’m not convinced that they’re up to prolonged heat.
Thanks for the replies, it’s good to know I’m not the only one to have noticed a strange smell from winter tyres. I’ve just found this on an internet search on a Canadian RX8 forum http://www.rx8club.com/canada-forum-35/winter-tires-rate-them-you-use-them-46819/page3/, so it might not be as rare as I first thought.
