We have a spare set of wheels with Toyo Snow Proxes. Bit more expensive than the Yokohamas, but they did a brilliant job last winter. Stopping distance on cold/wet/frosty roads was way better than standard tyres and they gave loads more grip and traction.
erm… winter? i love my Uniroyals but they’re ■■■■ in snow
My Avon Ice Touring STs, on the other… cracking winter tyre and work well in warmer climes
OP~ i would consider Nokians if you can get some They do well in Scandinavian winters so that should say something Vredestein also have a good name
Try MyTyres, Black Circles, Event Tyres, Camskill I’d even advocate ATS - well, my local ATS are good - it may help that we take the work’s vehicles there
Hi i brought some winter wheels and tyres last year…Steel rims 16"… tyres Goodyear Ultragrip 7 size 185/55/16 total transformed the car in snow couldn’t believe it, 5 inches of snow doing 40mph and still going in a straight line, i did ease off after a couple of miles, They seem to sit on top of the snow/ice and just grab hold, totally blown away. Looking back i think puting Goodyear Ultragrips 205/45/17 on my standard 17" wheels would have worked just as well and saved me buying new 16" rims etc
can’t wait for this winter bring it on I drive Mk3 2.0 sport
I know this is an old thread, but with all this snow I thought it relavent to add my experiences. After doing a fair amount of research I decided to buy a set of 16" wheels to run Winter tyres. The official tyre sizes for 16" rims are 20550s which give a much wider range of Winter tyre options, and much cheaper too. Plus with a second set of wheels you can just change them yourself each year. Anyway my research for sports car orientated winter tyres brought me to the “Nokian WR A3” tyres. These are Winter tyres specifically designed with handling, and higher speeds in mind. So when conditions are mild you can still have some fun. They’re also assymetrical so you can tyre rotate. As stated above the difference with Winter tyres is Massive, much MUCH more than I thought they would be. You will be leaving all the FWD cars on summers stuck in the snow as you carry on as normal, plus they even seem to grip well on ice?!
