Wiper arm removal

  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: removing the wiper arms to fit a new lower windscreen trim panel. I have the nuts off but the arms refuse to budge from their mounting posts. Any suggestions please?

Place the arms in the upright position and gently rock them at the spline end. A little easing fluid (plusgas) may ease them off.

Usually lightly pressing down the hinged part (at the end of the first section of the arm) enables you to pull it off the splines quite easily.

They are both great tips.
If they don’t work you have probably had some gorilla replace your windscreen in the past and has over tightened it. You can get a special puller for this task, use Plusgas first and leave the nut lightly in place to protect the threads.
P.S. Be very careful with the new trim panel it is very easy to break at the narrow section.

Thanks everyone for their tips. Sadly nothing has worked including the puller I purchased. Short of dynamite I am out of ideas. If I can’t remove the arm before the new trim arrives (out of stock) I will have to cut a slot in the new trim panel to slide it under the post.

The lads in Repair Shop might…have applied a bit of heat to them!
Trouble is the proximity of paint and plastic.
One of these cheap gas lighters might do it.
Plus, have a bottle of water handy.

That’s crazy.
I think the splines are tapered and not steel (brass?), so they can’t rust together.
Regular spraying and tapping sideways with a small hammer really ought to free it easily.

If it is still stuck you could split the wiper arm from around the splined shaft with a dremel and fit another arm? :man_shrugging:

I would advise you to get the proper tool to avoid doing damage to the car . They are inexpensive and easy to find on e-bay etc

Sorry , must have missed that bit!

On my lorries i removed the blade brought the arm up to 90 degrees then found an open ended tight fitting spanner on the opposite side to the arm.
This allows you to set up a rocking motion to release the arm.
I have never tried this on cars but it may be worth a try.

Not sure what puller you have tried but I would get a decent bearing puller. I used to have a compact hydraulic puller with small lipped arms that was ideal for things like this.
