Wiper - nearside ineffective

2001 Mk2.5

Driver side is no problem, but passenger side leaves those horrible strips.

Swapped blades around - still the same.

New blade, still the same.

Nut holding arm to spiggot is on correctly.

Is it possible that the spring on the arm is just tired and I need a new arm?

Maybe - try swapping the arms over.

Does it leave streaks in both the up and down sweeps? If it’s only doing it while going back down it could just be that the wipers not at 90 degrees to the surface of the glass.

I used to get this on my Capri till I used two adjustable spanners to slightly twist the wiper arm. It’s worth a look as it’s a free/simple fix.

Are you using genuine  Mazda wipers? The left hand side one has additional springs/curve to prevent this.

The O/S and N/S arms are different, the springs aren’t though so you could swap them over.

Try giving the windscreen a good clean with some meths or cellulose thinners and then polishing with glass polish.

“Are you using genuine  Mazda wipers? The left hand side one has additional springs/curve to prevent this.”

That’s what I understood.  The genuine replacement blades are handed with the passenger one designed to follow the curvature of the screen.  They are pricey though so I just bought some Bosch Superplus and can live with the passenger side streaks as I never sit in that side anyway!

Laughed like a good un at that.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, will try all when I knock off later - fyi, the original that was playing up is genuine mazda, the replacement isn’t.

Strange. The Mk1 and Mk2 use the same windscreen glass. Never had a problem with aftermarket blades on my Mk1.

i got these seem deacent enough, very quiet http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aero-Flat-Wiper-blades-NEW-Mazda-MX5-MIATA-ENOUS_W0QQitemZ270474278134QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3ef985f4f6

maybie the springs are going in the arms?

Wouldn’t know about the MkI personally but that’s what it says here about genuine blades and would seem to concur with the OP’s complaint :

I’ve just bought a new pair of Bosch (for half the price) and the passenger streaks slightly so would assume correct.

Of course if the wiperblades are old they will streak no matter what make they are in my experience.

That’s the normal situation, agreed. This smearing stays with the arm, not the blade, when I swap the blades around. Starting to think it’s the spring. Off out to give it a test.

Presumably, when I try to degrease the glass, keep the agent off the rubber seals and blades etc?

Certainly be very careful with thinners. Meths will be less aggressive but steady as you go all the same.

I clean my wiper blades with neat, concentrated screen wash.

Good tip, thanks - always give them a good wash at carwash time, but this is a much better idea.

OK, think I’ve cured it. Used a degreasant when I was washing car today, so flooded it with water to rinse, gave it a good soaping and flooded it again.

Looks tip top! Time will tell though.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
