wire springs on front brake pads

I fitted new front pads to my Mk.2.5 yesterday, genuine mazda from mx5 parts.  They say on their website that the wire hairpin springs which were originally fitted to the backplates are now deemed to be no longer necessary by mazda.  The backplates however still have holes in them for the springs.  I did not fit the old springs, but does the brake work just as well without them?  why did mazda fit them in the first place? and will the pads retract correctly without them?  Has anyone any experience of this?  Any comments/suggestion welcome

The pads on my MK1 rattle and clank about if the springs are not fitted. It doesn’t affect the efficiency of the brakes, but the noise is not good.

Just to report back on the situation. went on a long drive yesterday  brakes worked perfectly despite being ‘sans springs’ no rattles, squeeling etc.  So they do not seem to be necessary after all.

Mine has no springs fitted & no problems to speak of. Having said that if i had some springs i would fit them. I cant see any advantage from leaving them off. Would be interesting to know Mazdas reasons for the change.
