Wire Wheels, advice please

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __Phoenix
  2. I’m based near: __Ayrshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Wheels.

Advantages, hard to think of any to be honest. They are as a rule heavier, require more maintenance and I don’t know of any which do not require the use of inner tubes. Punctures aren’t slow anymore (deflation is instant) and tubes are generally not recommended /available for the sort of aspect ratio tyres fitted to MX5’s.
Cheers,
Millie

Millie is spot on. Don’t. They are an anachronism on a modern car and it’s difficult to add to the list of disadvantages. I have one though. Virtually impossible to keep clean.

Apparently at best OK for shows and stuff.
Said, many years back, to wobble/vibrate over 50- 60mph if needing tightened up.
There will be reasons…why they are never hardly ( if ever) seen.
Personally, they look brill on an Aston Martin DB4/5 or a classic Ferrari etc.

You do it , but may need to import from the states. You need 4 no adapters to knock off and rims. It will cost about £2000

And if you do buy them from abroad be aware that YOU are responsible for any import charges/Vat that may be liable - check it out before purchase.

Thanks for all the info. Don’t think I will go ahead as seems more bother than worth, but is there a standard alloy that I could fit that would kind of give me that spoky look??..

Way back, when I drove Triumph sports cars, the go to people for wire wheels, new and rebuilds, were Motor Wheel Services.

They’re now called MWS. Here’s their offering for MX5.

15" x 7 100 PCD

Bolt on, ie no adapters needed.
( Red ‘flash’ in pic is a MWS logo sticker, on the centre cap, that can be removed ).

£388.63 inc VAT Tubeless ( unless you’re using tyres that require tubes ! )

Moss Europe offer what appears to be exactly the same wheel at £471.95 inc VAT.

[ In 1976, my TR5 had wires. They clunked a bit because the splines on the adapters were
a bit worn. Spares for the TR5 were already getting difficult, and I often resorted to a little specialist in London, called Cox and Buckles. The Triumph TR6 had recently stopped production, and Pete Buckles made himself on hand to pick up loads of TR6 bits that the factory needed to offload. As a result C & B had some rather nice brand new Dunlop wheels that were original equipment on the TR6.
At £5 each.
I bought them, and fitted them to the TR5. They looked good. It’s just that I kind of missed the wires. They looked so cool. The result was that every 4 or 5 months, or so, I’d swap the wheels over.

I tended to drive briskly, rather than balls out. Can’t say I noticed much difference in car behaviour. Although the Dunlops were steel, rather than alloy…, would the weight difference of wires really be particularly noticeable in use. Cleaning them ? Couple of times a year. About the same frequency as I do now with daily, and MX5.

Cox and Buckles expanded over the years, into MG’s etc, and gradually became… Moss.
