Wood Burners

I like them so much, I have two!

One either end of my propertyđŸ‘đŸ»

I love sitting in front of a wood fire as much as anyone, and I grew up with several in our very old house. I was gutted when the one in our current house was condemned!

But.

They are terrible for the environment.

They are terrible for your health.

That’s not personal gripe or a crusade. Just scientifically verified facts.

In certain geographical conditions they can also be anti -social did to the chimney smoke not dissipating.

I think disagreement and counter views are still allowed?

The thread title reads wood burners.
Very friendly post by the way. Full of emotive, colourful language, straight out of the ‘modern’ internet playbook, such as ‘crusade’ and ‘hijacked’

You’d think so. Sometimes I think much of society goes around in a self perpetuating bubble with everyone agreeing with them, and get ratty when someone don’t share their view. Enter my world, no one agrees with me lol, but like you correctly said, counter views etc. We all don’t agree about everything :+1:

Epic pic of your cat. Looks like he/she’s goofing around, playing

I took ours out, as much as I liked the look, feel and smell (if not the dust and the need to feed the thing), I figured that if we were going to inhale carcinogens every day, I’d get more pleasure from smoking (although sadly I don’t do that either).

I remember when Energy Performance Certificates first came out I had to train up to do them, endured endless lectures and found out a strange anomaly.

For all the hoo-ha about burning wood, locally sourced, dry hardwood had the lowest carbon footprint, compared with oil and gas from the other side of the world and the processing costs. All due to proximity.

However, open, solid fuel fires were scored particularly low because they are inefficient, with most of the heat going up the chimney. That’s less of an issue with closed front wood burners but the insulated flues don’t save much heat. They are there to combat temperature gradients within the flue from bottom to top, which would slow down the extraction of waste gases.

Don’t use new or wet wood. It lowers the combustion temperature and will leave residues in the flue. Softwoods leave creosote in the flue. My neighbour is an “I burn damp logs, they last longer” advocate. I wonder if that’s what those brown stains are on my window sills - creosote?

On the odd occasions I’ve had an open fire I used a room HEPA air filter. It gets most of the tiny particles. I still use it if the neighbours are electing another Pope and I can smell it in the house.

:rofl::rofl: Sorry, female cat, but I do get the idea :joy:

Our short-haired dogs used to lie in front of the portable three-bar electric fire, blissfully dreaming they were toasting in hot midday African summer sunshine instead of the reality of chilly winter.

When the singeing smell was too much for us to bear, and wisps of smoke began to appear, we’d take pity and nudge the grilled one to roast his other side.

This lot lasted me 2 winters so far.

Burning it on our very clean burn stove.

As for burning petrol for fun

Surely it’s time we all bought an EV because the internal combustion engine is so polluting. Thank goodness the ICE will soon be banned

The irony is that when we cleaned up the atmosphere from particulates after WW2 it accelerated global warming, as the pollution was deflecting the rays of the sun.

Remember how clear the skies were during Lockdown. That must have had the same effect.

As I recall. the Ozone “Hole” above North America shrank ( good) by circa 4% or summat due to temporary post 911 No Fly rules. JUst goes to show how hard Mother Earth will reward given a start. If My memory of the % is wrong, please correct.

My grip with ‘log’ burners isn’t so much the eco stuff, it’s how a previously fine neighbourhood now smells rank with smoke, hurting the eyes, ‘ash’ looking stuff on my ND (light coloured), can’t put clothes outside on the line, and can sit watching strickly ‘it takes two’ and suddenly know that someone in the street just put their heating on. So my ‘principled’ stance is I don’t buy one, and highlight their impact on my own life.
Concerning EV’s whilst of course there are arguments concerning the true econess of an EV over its entire lifetime, I too say if it bothers you so much, and you thank goodness they’ll be banned soon (‘ICE’ cars), I say good on you, so maybe it’s time to take a principled stand and sell your MX-5. Maybe photograph the selling as a way to celebrate getting rid of it and all it’s ‘ICE’?
