Worn drivers seat bolster on MK1 cloth seats

Well, as the title says.

The seat is in good condition apart from the worn bolster on the off-side of the seat.  It has worn down to the foam.

I was wondering if anyone has any of this material, possibly off some old irrepairable seats.  It is for a MK1, it’s cloth and is like a thick cord material in black.  If so, I would be very grateful of a scrap piece of this fabric so that I can darn it in place.Geek

Failing this, I will try and get some cord fabric from somewhere.

Any other ideas on how to repair the seat? Thumbs up

 How big a piece Ben.

Stop opening the door to get in and out to save wear on the bolster???keep the roof down and jump in and out in a jukes of hazard stylieWink…but then again at your ageThinking

Aye, most the damage was done before I bought the car, but now it’s there, I keep catching jeans rivets and trouser pocket buttons on the shredded fabric Sad

I’ll have you know, I’ve got getting in and out of my sporty car down to a tee!   No need for Dukes of Hazard County!

I reckon a piece about 6"x6" at least.  The bigger the better, as I want to tuck it in the hole and overlap it.  It’s the un-patterned corduroy fabric and it’s on the headrest too!Wink

Are you going to chop your seats up for me, wayne?Stick Tongue Out

Not my leather ones i won’tWink

I’ll have a look in the bat cave,i’m sure i will be able to find you something buddy.Thumbs up

Forgot you have leather seats.  I love mine in the Jasper!

Bat cave!  That would be great if you have some!  I’ve got to get that hood webbing kit to you too!

Have you got a darning needle too? SmileWinkStick Tongue Out

I’ll dig in tomorrow and send you a text, just need to finish a roadster here first, for an owner.Thumbs up

Ha ha!  No, I’ll have a go with a big needle and some black wool or something.

I can offer a passenger side seat cover - backrest and/or seat cover - from a 1997 car - in great order. I bought a complete set when I had a mark 1. I used the drivers side back rest cover and have the passenger side complete + drivers side seat section. I need to cover the costs of purchase at the time so can offer backrest or seat at £5 for each. Postage shouldn’t be much - probably £4 or so. If you’re interested let me know. They are in the garage now - I bought a mark 3 and sold the mark1.

Ivan

Hi Ivan.  When you say seat “cover”  do you mean the original material or an after market seat cover?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. The covers were the original covers from a mark 1 - the cord black/grey ones that were standard. I bought a used set from another guy, but only used the drivers side backrest - I had a worn/torn bolster too. The covers come off your seat, when you remove the seat from the car, by prising little metal clips apart - though I replaced them with small cable ties. I had a quick look in the garage and I have two headrest covers in perfect order - these velcro on to the headrest, one back in good order and one that is worn. Also one seat cover ie the bit you set your bum on in good order and one that is a little mouldy but I expect I will clean. So if you are going to patch you just need a headrest or one of the other covers. At the time I went to a car upholsterer who said he could do an invisible mend if he could get the original material. So I figure you can buy the bit you need from me and I have more material which might help out some others.

By all means come back to me if you need to. Also if anyone else needs a bit of the original material, contact me.

Ivan

Hi Ivan.  Sounds like the bolster bit doesn’t come off from what you say (you were offered a repair), but the backrest and base does???.   The yes the headrest bit would be great!  Maybe the seat base cover too.

I have sent you a PMThumbs up

Hi i will be changing some seat later this month, and the one i’m removing have any a little wear on them wear in them, thinking about it i might have one laying around  in the back of the shed that has no wear but i just can’t remember if it’s the driver’s seat or not will go and look! As soon as the rain stops Thinking

Ivan

Cheers Ivan!Thumbs up  Have now fitted the whole passenger back-rest to the drivers seat.  The holes are on the wrong side but have used a scrap piece of vinyl from the old cover, placed underneath and new holes made on the opposite side.  It fits great and all secured neatly with mini cable ties to the rods in the foam (thanks for the advice Ivan).  I’m keeping the base cover just in case.  Drivers’ seat now transformed, looks like new!Smile  A colleague has same problem with a worn bolster so I could help out with the headrest fabric as a patch.

Buttons on back pockets of work trousers will be removed to prevent the same happening again!
