That in my opinion is the problem with dealers, they are in it for a profit. They don’t see what a car is like to live with long term so his takes are based upon test drives and then back to the show room. I have seen a lot of his videos and found he lacks a lot of basic knowledge.
I would have thought the idea of a budget sports car is the MX5. It’s light weight, 2 seater, rwd, has good handelling and is responcive. MX5 is Cheap to buy and easy to look after. If you need a budget car do you have money for 15/20mpg and unreliability, who knows.
He recommends an Audi S4, they are 1885kg ,sports cars are defined as generally 2 seater agile cars that are responsive. Not sure a German tank is really a sports car, more of a Autobahn blitzer for comfortable cruising.
To be fair to the guy, he did a review of an NB a couple of years ago which was very complimentary. In fact it was one of the reasons I bought mine:
All of his videos are of his stock. Self financing means to push through some right dogs, plus plugging a vpn, car checker, OBD2 dongle, extra side income. Lately, he’s been employing a camera man as he starts looking at dipsticks, as if he knows anything.
On the MX5 video, he forgot to mention it wasn’t a couple of advisories for rust, it was a fail for dangerous corrosion in the sills and one of the front chassis legs (so much for his comment that Mk2s resist rust better than Mk1s). A year after he sold the car, it had advisories about the 2011 repair work starting to come undone.
He was very complementary about the car as he wanted it sold, preferably for top money.
Anyhow, he seems to have completely forgotten about its existance.
He will share his secrets;

In the old days, that would have been about mixing in the rust bits into the filler, so magnets stick, and how a pinstripe can make a wavy panel look straightish. And any other tricks of the trade. In the old days, I ended up with a Mini van where the owner was really crafty in building a scuttle from newpaper and plaster. I didn’t know better. Its all different now.
Yes, he’s a dealer, and I wasn’t born yesterday. (1951, actually.) I think the general points he makes about the fun of owning an MX-5 are valid, and they helped make up my mind about buying one (as opposed to an MR2 or an MG TF).
Anyway, I didn’t buy his NB, I did my due diligence and bought one with 31k miles on it from the original lady owner who lives less than 5 miles from my house.
I think he was reading from whatever script he prepared, based on a bit of googling, rather than actually having an opinion on the car. His constant repetition of negative stereotypes suggests that might be how he really feels (and a bit of a poundshop Clarkson, note the offensive joke about a prison in SE Asia). He certainly worked on a script of sorts, trying to work in witty jokes.
But your mention of the MG and Toyota bring to mind at least two other alternatives for the cheap sports car. The Toyota might be a bit of a stalking horse bargain. Not the prettiest, but dynamically very good (reportedly), and very reliable. And quite a few for sale, even though they are invisible on the road. But the MG and Toyota could have easily made that top 6.
I’ve watched a few of his videos, and he comes across as a bit of a know it all.
I much prefer Chops Garage, much more entertaining.
I also watch High Peak Autos, regularly, and also Chops Garage.
I’m not really bothered whether High Peak reads from a script, or not.
If I was doing a Youtube channel, I’d also do prep, research, and use some kind of
a prepared script, as a guideline at least. I also thought that particular video was a bit ■■■■,
but there’s been plenty that I’ve found to be interesting and genuinely informative.
He at least seems to be a proper dealer, as in offering cars for sale from a proper base, and to the public.
Chops Garage… he seems to me to be a bit of a chancer, he never, as far as I can see, accepts the responsibilities of being a dealer. He always uses a form of words to evade that, and to sell on the cars on a trade basis…, ie, this is what it is, no comeback.
You must be watching different videos to me then, Chops garage is small scale but does sell a lot to the public, and always seems to go the extra mile for a customer when something goes wrong.
