Yokohama AD08R?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2012 Kuro
  2. I’m based near: East Midlands
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Tyre Suitability

Hi, looking to get some tyres for summer fast road and maybe a couple of track days, nothing serious, for my NC 2.0.

Has anyone got any views on suitability of the Ad08r, not rs? I have been offered some that suit. I have used them before on a MR2 roadster. Can’t really do a dedicated track tyre so need something that can handle some rain in the summer on the road to. They will be a compromise for track I know.

Thanks

These were great tyres on an Elise. The later RS model doesn’t review nearly as well.

seem alright

Nice find. That’s pretty good confirmation. He mentions how good they are in the comments as well. I think I’ll take them from him. Well done

Yes, his are the r not the rs, much worse due to the changes. They are good on the mr2 as well but wondered if the extra 150kg would be too much. The video suggests not though so I think I will get them for the price he is offering.

how much are you buying the AD08R ?

Why? They are not new. Second hand but hardly used.

Ah i thought you buy them new… Im sure you know but tyres age mate. Depends how they are stored, whether they had repairs etc etc.

If i was into drifting yea id buy used tyres and shred them but personally I wouldn’t buy used tyres from some random dude on the internet and hit the track with them doing 100mph+

Dunno… personally I’d rather buy new but heyho… whatever you want to do.

I appreciate your concern but i am comfortable with what I am looking at and the risks involved. I have bought many used tyres in the past without problem.

Unfortunately these have been replaced by a version that does not perform as well in order to meet new regulations so they are no longer a preferred choice as hard to come by.

Fair enough I guess :+1:

The AD08R was a liked tyre, the RS has some interesting comments made going from good to bad, but so did the R and I think every tyre ever has the same comments. Just be aware that is not at all a “good” time BTG, especially as it is promoting a tuned car and Ohlins dampers. It looks dramatic and “on it” because he is over driving in places and doing the “shaky hand” stuff, but in reality he is braking early and not carrying speed, and not over taxing the tyre.
Just be aware that the R was well out of production by mid 2019. The good in the wet, good in the dry reputation will probably be suffering on the “good in the wet” part by now, especially if 3mm has gone off the tread.

Absolutely, it’s all about personal experience. They are only just over a mm worn. Hardly used.

I’ve been very happy with the new version including during a 60 minute session which went from drenching wet to having a fully dry line. They are not the fastest on track or the quietest or most comfy on the road but they’re just good at everything. Proper semi slicks would be better at the track and PS4s or the new PS5s would be better on the road, with the latter apparently being a decent wet or dry track tyre too.

What is the advantage of wiggling the steering wheel?

I will probably buy some ps4 as well to be fair. About the same price as the ado8r part worn

What a difference tyres make.

I needed to use the car to get the tyres put on and they have made an amazing difference to the car handling compared to the mishmash of cheap tyres that were on the car, despite it being Feb. Very much recommended if you need some summer tyres and don’t mind picking some up second hand.

I will take them off now until the temperature rises.

R were brilliant. the perfect all rounder.

RS I won’t ever fit to a car again. They’re terrible. how they got it so wrong I’ll never understand!!

Genuinely, try Falken Fk510 for a mid ranged priced (but not mid range performance) tyre. They’re absolutely brilliant. Used them on the road and at Oulton a couple of weeks ago, didn’t misbehave once and are great in all road conditions. Seem to be wearing really well too.

I really advise against the Falken FK510, on the basis of the 4 currently on my 2.0 ND that I’ve had on since March 2021. They were amazing to begin with but by Sept/Oct with wear the performance had really dropped off despite having lots of tread left.

They’re also very temperature sensitive, grip really falls away below 10’c outside so they seem very biased towards hot summer days.

They were a false economy and they’re going to get changed before they’re completely worn as they are now verging on the dangerous.

Most summer tyres are like this. I would not expect them to operate well below 10 degrees. I would not throw them away. Do like I am, get yourself another set of wheels with either all season or winter tyres on them.

The FK510s are no good now even when it’s warm, it was very mild over Christmas, always double digits, bags of tread left, they were still absolutely pants compared to anything else I’ve had on this car. They’ve also worn quickly, I think they might have 8000 miles on the rear and quite near the wear indicators now.

I’m going back to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 as I used them all year on this very car and they never got as poor as my FK510s currently even when it was near freezing and they were down to the wear bars. They’re a bit expensive for use as a trackday tyre though, £92 a corner whereas the Falkens were under £70.

Heard a lot of good things about the GY A5
