Young driver insurance advice

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently purchased a 2002 1.8 MX-5 NB. I’m just wondering what are some of the cheapest insurance companies I could use being a young driver (i’m 18). I want to insure the MX-5 as a second car and will only really be using it on the weekends as a sunday car. I’ve been driving for a year and have 1 year NCB (however the NCB is being used on my daily car). I understand being such a young driver trying to get insured on one of these cars isn’t going to be cheap but the quotes I’m getting at the moment through comparison websites are around 3000+ which seems ridiculous to me especially if I’m not using the car as a daily driver. I’ve tried a few specialists such as footman james and lancaster but they wouldn’t give me a quote online. I was also wondering what the implications are if I were to be put as a named driver on my dads policy if he were to insure the car.
Thank you for the help in advance.

I insured my first MGB through my dad as a second driver. This was norty and not recommended nowadays.

Ironically, it could lower your premium if a parent was added to your policy as second driver. So consider doing it the other way round

Online is OK for old wrinkleys like me wanting the cheapest cover but you may need to visit a local insurance broker (a real person!) who may be able to ring around and get a good deal.

Have you tried a two car quote?

Thanks for the reply,
I’ve already tried adding my parents as named drivers to the policy and it still comes up with silly prices unfortunately. I also did try a two car quote through Hastings direct but again they wouldn’t give me a quote. I will look into visiting an insurance broker, I didn’t even realise they were a thing to be honest lol.
I’m going to also ring up a few companies as I’ve heard you can sometimes get better deals over the phone.

I tried you guys already and was being quoted 6k unfortunately.

Hi Saulty. Yes insurance brokers are a “thing” and I have been one for over 40 years! So well before the internet! In fact before the internet you either had to walk in to an actual insurance company on the high street or see a broker who had agencies with several just like a travel agent. Sadly, from experience I can tell you that you are unlikely to get anything affordable at the moment and it is always best to get the quotes before buying the car to avoid nasty surprises like this. I hope your dream comes true one day.

Thinking out loud, I would ring up your current insurer and ask about using your NCB for the Mazda. Talk about limited mileage and maybe Third Party Fire and Theft cover to bring the premium down. Ask if they offer a discount for OC membership. Say you can start a new policy for your daily. Any discount for two cars?

It’s near the end of the month. Someone might want to some new business to meet targets. Whether it’s your current insurer or someone else.

Give Admiral a go, ring and talk to them.
I’ve always had positive responses from them they are usually willing to try and help.
My daughter a few years ago found it difficult to get insurance at a reasonable price as a new driver. She’s much older than yourself of course, she’s still insured with them and I do too.
As suggested try a multi car policy, you can add the second on when that policy is up. Good idea adding a parent, my daughter still has me on her policy.
I now have a multi car policy, limited mileage on both and home insurance with them.

I’ve found online quotes can not give a true quote, always ring for a one to one quote, you can knock stuff off you don’t need like courtesy cars, breakdown cover etc for example.

Worth a phone call.:+1:

I think, but am not sure, that the insurance company might be unhappy about this if you were driving it more than him and they found out. My understanding is that the main driver should be the person that uses the vehicle the most, but I don’t work in insurance so you really need to check with whatever company you decide to go with.

Try A-Plan, another broker: Car Insurance Quotes and Cover | Howden Insurance You will need to call. I use them because my ND is modified. They were very helpful and spent a lot of time on the phone with me going through everything.

Go to moneysavingexpert.com and read their advice on how to get a good deal - there’s many ins and outs to it - e.g. adding parents as named drivers, keeping the car on the road not in a garage, giving yourself the correct job title, selecting the appropriate voluntary excess etc., etc. Also bear in mind that your NCD can only be used on one car at a time.

Just to add it’s the1.8 engine that does for you at 18 years of age. A 1.0 litre car is ideal for a young driver but still expensive. My daughter started off in a Kia Picanto (at 27 years old) that was expensive at the time to insure, now drives an higher capacity diesel 7 seater for family duties.

Not always as “some” insurance companies will “mirror” your NCB if you own two cars/vehicles.
I did that when I had a car registered in my name and we bought a motor home.
That maybe specific to age perhaps. :man_shrugging:
The big bonus with that come Renewal time the following year is you get the renewal stating the NCB for both.

Sorry to hear about your predicament.
I’ve got my mine insured with Adrian flux. It’s a 1993. Like yourself my daughter is 18 she will be 19 in May. She has her own car a Toyota Aygo insured for 15k miles a year. She has been driving about 18 months. She said she loves the Mazda and would I consider adding her to the insurance policy. I phoned Adrian flux they point blank told me no. They would not even give a quote for her as a named driver. They said i should tell my daughter to phone herself and take out the policy in her name with my wife and I as named drivers. I thought this was wrong as she wouldn’t be the main driver as I believed insurance was for the main driver and the named drivers would be using it occasionally especially when the mileage is for 3k a year. I thought perhaps it may go up due to her age a couple of hundred quid maybe more but was shocked with the outright NO. Hope you get some joy and if you do please let us know via this thread.

was in the same situation, most classic car insurance companies wont insure you untill you’re 25

Quote me Happy did a very good deal for a 2 car policy covering my primary car and the wife’s. Downside is that it can only be administered online by the primary policy holder - which happens to be the missus. Shouldn’t be an issue if you put both cars on the same policy. What you probably need to do is let your main policy run to keep this year’s NCD and synchronise them at some point in the future.

Hi guys, I’ve now managed to get insured through admiral for a decent-ish price considering my circumstances. I appreciate all the replies and all the help!!
