Your car history

Another short one coming up…

#1 1989 VW Passat, B3, Saloon. Silver, with 1781cc, 8v petrol engine. Totally bomb-proof and much loved car. It was the family car for ~10years before I took it over. I did 25,000 miles in two years of ownership, taking it to a grand total of just under 170,000 miles. Absolutely no rust (Mazda take note!) at all and the engine didn’t use a drop of oil. Some random, yet easily fixible electrical faults reared their heads every so often, but I got the feeling for as long as I wanted to use it, the trusty old car would keep going.

Eventually decided that if I waited until the Passat died before getting an MX I could be waiting a very long time, so made the jump to Mazda 18 months ago. Those twisty roads in the South East were just too much to resist!

If my memory serves me right…

  1. v old w reg 1.3 escort - folks bought me for about £500 when i passed test. Good though.
  2. e reg escort xr3i - essex boy :)
  3. ax gt - fantastic!!

  5. ax gt - love them!
  6. proton satria sport
  7. proton god knows what horrible thing
  8. ax gt - fantastic!!

  13. xr2i (1.8) - awesome!!
  14. proton satria GTI - actually v v good!!  but terrible resale!
  15. AX GT - hmmmm!
  16. BMW 318 auto - surprisingly v good until power steering rack went!
  17. A 49cc moped.  Oh dear!
  18. Alfa Romeo 156 - still got it and love it!!  Comfort is excellent for long journeys and engine is sooo sweet!  Mrs C's full time car
  19. Golf GTI Mk 3 Cab - nice electric roof, but 115bhp in a car that size!?  Nice, but handled like a spoon!
  20. MX5 Mk 1.  Never ever thought I would get one, but then drove it and the rest is history!!!  Longest owned car ever... So far....
Only 34, is that good or bad?

Are you my double?  Our current fleet consists of a mk1 Mx5 1.6 and an Alfa 156 SportWagon (2.4JTD 2001).  Again the Alfa is the wifes car as we are expecting our first child (in two weeks!!).

At 34 that seems like alot of car changes!!  I am 35 and have owned about 7 different cars.  Some staying in my ownership for 6 years!!  Maybe I just dont get as bored with motors as you??

My car history, (Simon’s, that is…)

T-reg Peugeot 504 1800 saloon in white. Passed my test in this, then sold it to my granny’s next door neighbour. Lovely car, undergeared, like a mobile 3-piece suite.

X-reg Lancia Beta HPE. 2-litre twin-cam engine, steering heavy as lead, went like a rocket, had an unfortunate lack of cornering ability. Ground the nose off on a stone wall (unintentionally moving sideways at 40mph).

M-reg SAAB 99 EMS. The Clown Car, cos bits were always falling off. Driver’s door had to be locked, otherwise it would fly open on corners, it kept jumping out of 3rd. and boiling up for no readily apparent reason. One of the front dampers wasn’t actually connected to the wishbone. Was replaced by…

N-reg SAAB 99 L. Turned out to be a “Flintstone” car when the rear damper came off it’s top mounting and caught between the wheel and the wheelarch. Thus ended the SAAB love affair.

B-reg Ford Escort 1.6 Automatic. Was a bit strapped for cash by now, so I shared this hearing-aid beige sex machine with my mother.

Y-reg Lancia Beta HPE Automatic. Once again shared with my mother, but a little more acceptable…until it rusted away with less than 30,000 on the clock (chorus of “I told you so” please).

D-reg Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6L. A really nice car. Installed an upgraded audio system and ran it for years, until I got my first company car, which was…

A D-reg BMW 518i in white. Another nice car, apart from it’s unfortunate habit of munching head gaskets, that is… followed by

H-reg Citroen XM 2.0 Automatic. Yes, I do like auto boxes. Another company car, but damned expensive to run. Had to give it up due to a slight downturn in profits. Which led to…

J-reg Citroen BX 1.6 Meteor. The suspension went up and down and it was quite quick. That’s it really…

E-reg Fiat Croma 2.0. Big, comfy, fast. Gremlins started getting into the electrics and I eventually sold it for scrap.

K-reg Fiat Croma 2.0 Auto. Facelift model. Handed down from my father, who’d modified it to accept 15" Speedline allloys from a Renault 25. Swapped for…

H-reg Mercedes 200TE Auto. Intergalactic mileage on it. Built lke a brick outhouse. P/Xed for…

T-reg Toyota Camry 2.2. Another executive bruiser. Put a lot of miles on it going from County Durham to Grantham to see Fran when she lived down there. Sold to someone from Birmingham and I swear I saw it in Keswick this last New Years’ Eve.

V-reg Volvo S40 diesel. Eventually handed back to Volvo Finance as we got a company car. Run in parallel with…

Our K-reg Eunos S-Special. Bought with the money from Fran’s house sale.

03-reg Fiat Stilo Multiwagon. Worst. car. ever…sold due to recession…

M-reg. Toyota RAV-4 3-door. Bought in good times, wrecked by our local postie driving into the side of it.

P-reg Toyota RAV-4 5-door. Bought with the settlement from the 3-door.

54-reg Fiat Doblo high roof with wheelchair ramp. Bought for my father-in-law, who’s in a wheelchair, so he can go on trips out.

55-reg MX-5 2.0 litre. The new beast. 116,00miles in 3 and a bit years, bought for £4500. We’ve had it 2 weeks today…pictures in Readers’ Rides.

Mmmkay, passed test in Apr 2004: Silver Y Reg Fiat Punto, 1.2 - with alloys and K&N (of course!

Saw a few months later after a trip overseas, then bought (ooops, shouldn’t have bothered, loans are baaaaad!): Red 04 Reg Punto Sporting, 1.2. It was the colour that tempted me

Went to Germany not long after and bought (tax free): 54 Reg Fiat Stilo - this was a good car actually, I rather liked it!

Moved back to UK, significantly worse off £ wise. Traded Stilo in for a R reg Punto Sporting in dirty rust orange. My WORST car ever. It was a dog. I sold it to my brother (he knew the score on how bad it was so it was a guilt free sale!) for £750 before heading overseas…head gasket blew a short while after!

Got back from overseas stint and bought: 51 Reg VW Golf, 5 door, 1.6. Pipercross induction kit, lowered and colour coded with Recaros inside. Loved it but the cats crumbled leaving me with a £800 repair bill. Couldn’t afford to tax and MOT it so flogged it at a MASSIVE loss before heading off overseas again.

Spent my time away debating S2000, MR2 Roadster or MX5. Admitted to myself that, depite my brother pi*s taking I’d always wanted a '5 so I got one! 54 Reg Arctic is mine! [:D]

Not long driving but I think I’ve settled down now after my turbulent car history!

I really have to reflect Hangaku’s sentiments…some say it better than I can!

Started driving in 1992, but from '96 until last week I managed to do without a car, getting lifts or borrowing cars when need be… including the following, Honda Prelude '91, Peugeot 405 Estate diesel, '98 Merc E280, '94 Merc C200, '91 Rover 825 SL, '98? Honda Civic VTi Coupe, '03 Honda Accord 2.0i, Nothing amazing or sporty, but the Prelude was nice with the 4 wheels steer

X reg  Astra 1.3 L Mk 1 - Metallic brown with blacked out windows and a XR3i spoiler glued to the roof, blew the engine up twice… first time was at 5am on the M1 on the way home from a rave.

W reg Fiesta 950 Popular Mk 1 - Orange, Cost £80 and had holes in the floor so large that when I went through puddles the mats would float up.  Someone smashed the passenger side quarter light so I replaced it with ply-wood and it was incapable of going over 55mph, perhaps the fact that when I checked the oil it had congealed into a brown paste might have been the cause… having said that, it was great fun and totally dependable until I wrote it off

C Reg Orion 1.3 L - White, bland car to be honest.  I can hardly remember it now.

F Reg - Bedford Pickup truck - Cool vehicle in a way. It had a bench seat, column change and it most definitely had a bit of character! Sadly my mate borrowed it until a truck hit it and that was the end of that.

S Reg 1998 BRG MX-5 Mk 2 VS (aka Gillian)  Finally found a car so cool that I wanted to get behind the wheel again, it’s only been a week, but I look forward to driving to and from work, going to the shops and making excuses to go just about everywhere… If I could drive to the bathroom I would!  Due to the number of speed cameras I never thought I’d be able to enjoy driving again, but even when just pootling about this car just makes me smile like a cheshire cat.  I could kick myself for not getting a '5 earlier.

Only joined this forum today and just having a look around. i havent had very many cars to be honest,

#1: S plate blue Citroen Saxo VTR - first car, had it for 5 years… never broke down, nothing went wrong, appart from me flipping it onto its side hehe [:$]

#2: G Reg BMW 535i - Track car attempt as it was a freebee from my dad, unfortunatley too many bits wrong with it so i scrapped it!

#3: 54 plate Honda Civic Type R - Fantastic car, sold it when i was made redundant earlier this year [::(] miss it lots.

#4: Watch this space [:P]

Markkk

Hey all! Heres my history! (I really shouldnt have so much of it for such a short time period!)

2006 - 2001 Piaggio Zip 50cc - £400 My first ever vehicle at 16, I didnt care I could only do 45mph, it was a way of getting mobile! Passed on to my sister so that she could have wheels at 16, it got stolen 3 months after she was given it, torched, and never recovered =[

2007 - 1996 Honda Civic 1.4i £1400 - My first car which was bought as a 17th bday present (lucky i know!) I learnt on it and passed my test in it, it was bulletproof reliable and made me appreciate jap build quality. I did the young “live it loud” thing and kitted it out with a grands worth of audio, sounded pretty sweet! Unfortunately I didnt treat it very well and the body over a year got dinged and scraped and bashed. I sold it without the ICE for £475 thinking it would fail its MOT - saw it about a month ago and it went straight through the next 2 MOTS it had needing nothing but a bit of exhaust gum and new brake pads.

2008 - 1995 Honda Civic 1.5 Coupe Special Black £995 - This was the first car that i bought with my own cash, which felt really good! This car for some reason felt really really good, the only thing I didnt like is it didnt have leccy windows. Unfortunately, rust was a problem. I kept it for 9 months until jan 2k9 and had some of the best times in the car but realised it was time to move on. I managed to sell it for £950 with 3 months MOT left, which I thought was awesome.

2009 - 2001 Ford Fiesta Zetec-S £1495 - I had no idea what car I really wanted and was about to go and buy another 4 door civic just to have something comfy to pootle about in until i found my ideal car, but this one caught my eye on autotrader and I had it on my driveway the next day. Unfortunately, about a month after i bought it it started leaking oil and water pretty badly, several tests for head gasket failure were carried out but none came back conclusive, and even a garage couldnt figure out why it was losing fluids. Then the rear wiper motor packed up, and it needed two front tyres, as well as the zorst blowing. I got rid for £1300 shortly after.

2009 - 1993 Mazda MX5 1.6 UK Model £1450 - I had decided I wanted an MR2 about a month or 2 before i sold the fezzer, had been to test drive several, but couldnt find a clean one in good nick that felt great, my dad had been nagging me for ages to drive a 5 and give it a go, and im so glad i finally caved and did - I went to test drive a jap import that had the t!ts modded off of it, which was good fun, but it felt a little tired and worn. We then went straight over to drive the one i now own in original condition and bought it pretty much on the spot. Nothing but good experiences to report, amazing to drive, fairly easy to service and nothing has really gone wrong apart from the problem i had with the hoses all leaking… But thats fixed now  Hopefully many happy years to come!

I’ve been driving since 2005, and have owned four cars to date!

2005-2006

  • 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7 turbo diesel - Didn’t drive it as my main
car after a year, but stayed in the family until 2008. Not too sure it
really had a turbo, went like a canal boat.

2006-2006 - 1998
Toyota Prius Hybrid - not too sure what I was thinking with this one.
Caught my eye because it was unusual, nice car though, didn’t travel
very far on the electric motor.

2007-2009 - 2004 Volkswagen Polo TDI - Nice to drive, relaxing very economical, but average, and it was purple. It had to go.

2009-current - 1999 Mazda MX-5 1.6i - I’ve lusted for one of these for months and in April i took the plunge and bought a mint 67,000 mile example, all it needed was a new roof, which doesn’t really leak that much so I might wait a while! Wish my 1.6 version had more gadgets like leccy windows- and more power, but at least it looks good now especially with newer and bigger sport mx-5 alloys, clear rear lights and indicator/reflectors. Love it, but it’s just not a sensible car at all, miss having space, but you don’t buy this car for practicality reasons!

I think this is about right (embarrasing as it is…):

1.0l Nissan Micra 1990 - stolen and set on fire, b&rtards!

1.6l Mitsubishi Colt 1998 - quite liked this car, but lost it on a muddy corner and wrote it off.

1.4l Fiat Uno 1995 - head gasket went within a month of getting it, sold it shortly afterwards.

1.4l Ford Escort 1989 - blue car, red bonnet. nice.  Steering wheel was like a volume control for the tyre squeal.

1.4l Vauxhaul Corsa 1998 - yuck

1.6l Nissan Primera 1997 - Nice car, but some tw&t came round a corner on the wrong side of the road and wrecked it.

2.0l Renault Espace 1994 - surprisngly good for lift-off oversteer

1.3l Hyundai Accent 2000 - my current ‘family’ car.  Bag of poo, but cheap as chips to run.

1.8l Eunos Roadster 1994 - oh yeah!

and my bike history:

1979 Honda CB50J

1995 Honda CG125 - Volvo pulled out in front of me and snapped it in two.  Don’t think it made a dent in the volvo!

Honda NS125RK - learnt to knee-down on this whilst still on my L-plates

1994 Honda RVF400 jap import - awsome bike, wish I’d kept it for longer but crashed it at Cadwell and it had to go :frowning:

1997 Kawasaki ZX6R ninja - had it 6 weeks before putting it into a field at 130mph.  Quick in a striaght line, but cr&p on the corners, felt like a boat after the RVF.

1986 Yamaha SDR200 jap import.  Total hooligan bike, it constantly wanted to be wheelied!

1999 Suzuki SV650 road bike - Fun bike with an awsome V-twin roar.

1999 Suzuki SV650 track bike

1998 Montesa 315R trials bike - still own this one, it scratches my biking itch without putting me in mortal danger which is nice!

I swear I’ve done this list before on here, or the old place, but here goes:

2CV (free)

AX GT (fun but broken)

Honda CRX 16i16 mk1 (perfect but killed by a german)

Honda CRX 16i16 mk2 (ended up on slicks as a track day car)

Toyota MR2 mk1 (destroyed by my brother)

Vauxhall Astra GTE (digital dash!)

Italjet 50 (bought with no bodywork and never entirely fixed)

Toyota MR2 T-Bar mk1 (perfect until it rusted away)

Honda CRX Si Moonroof (import and part of the tragic his-and-hers CRX fleet while I was married, later “stolen” due to our hugely unjust divorce laws, then written off during a bout of natural justice some years later)

Kawasaki ZXR400 (perfect if I were 10% smaller than I am)

Nissan 200SX (fast, dull and always broken)

Toyota MR2 GTi16 mk2 (dangerous then brilliant as I slowly fixed it)

BMW 320i E30 (50 quid drift shed)

Kawasaki ZX7R (amazing)

Nissan Silvia (hilarious drift shed, and often broken)

Mazda MX5 NA (drift shed and current competition car)

BMW 535i E34 (drift shed and 'ring taxi)

Lotus Elise Sport 160 (perfect)

Mazda RX7 FC (track day/drift car now with a 3.9l V8)

BMW 325i E30 (drift shed)

On average about 1 vehicle per year snce I passed my test, although I had one of the CRXs for 7 years and one of the MR2s for 5 years. The MX5 has been with me for 4 years now.

Of that list I would have these ones again: Honda CRX 16i16 mk1, Toyota MR2 mk1 and 2, Mazda MX5, BMW 535i E34, Lotus Elise Sport 160, Mazda RX7 FC, BMW 325i E30 and the ZX7R. Anyone who can’t love those must be a little dead inside.

Blooming hell…some mega lists there. Nice to see there are still some people out there that s**t money.
