Your car history

I might be considered a mere mortal amongst some of you MX-5 owning gods and godesses. However, at the age of 30 years ancient, I have owned my fair share of motors, and regard myself as a general motoring fanatic. I believe that my impecible ownership history reflects this perfectly (wait for it, wait for it).

So, what cars have you owned, what did you do with them and why did you get rid of them? Here is my list:

#1: B plate Mini 25 Special Edition (Ernie!)

This car sat in my driveway gather rust, while I feverishly tried to pass my driving test. An unfortunate change in circumstances halted my learning, and there the car sat for nearly two years, untouched. A local rally driver bought the car from me for a few hundred quid. Only once did I see the car again, it had just two fron bucket seats, a full roll cage, and 6 hella spot lights. It sounds lovely. I believe that it died shortly after that.

#2: B plate Petrol Green Ford Fiesta Mk2. 1.1 Ghia

My first legal car! This car was pre-modified when I bought it, as it was sitting on XR2 pepperpots, and XR2 springs and dampers. The rest of the car was standard. It cornered like a rocket on rails, and quite regularly outran much bigger cars (courtesy of North Wales valley roads). Eventually it got a K&N pancake filter, and it was set to take on the world (more mouth than action!). It was my daily runner for nearly a year, before a local girl pleaded with me to sell it to her, which I gladly did.

#3: A plate Hearing Aide Beige Fiesta Mk2 1.1

My mum’s old car, handed to me as a feebie. This car was made mostly of tappets and rust. It lasted all of two months, before it decided to tap no more. Had a short meeting with a long crusher.

#4: D plate silver Peugeot 209 SRi

This car was my first real introduction to insanity on the roads. It was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, as it was pretty much just a 205 GTi engine in a 309 shell. It got lots of love from my by way of a full engine rebuild from Pug specialist Skip Brown. The car was scarily fast for an 8v 1.6 injection, possibly even too fast for it’s light rear end, as it did light to kick on roundabouts. I joined the Peugeot Sports Car Club, and attended regular meetings where I met the car’s eventual new owner. He promised to love it as much as I did. The last I saw of it, it was stripped of excess weight, and running quarter mile drag races.

#5: T plate green Mk1.5 facelift Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 SRi 120 Saloon

This was my first “grown up” car. By this time, I was a professional, and my car had to reflect it. It was slow, heavy and drank oil like tomorrows business. But it had electric bits! It was again fun to drive around twisty corrners, and when you could keep momentum going, was pretty good. However, it was blindly bought from Yes Car Credit, and the APR was 5,000,000% a year (ok, maybe not, but not far off), so after half of it’s term, it went back to them, with a glad wave and a cheery song. No more Vauxhall’s for me, thank you very much.

#6: X plate black Saab 9-3 2.0T HOT:

Oh. My. God.

Imagine a boat with a rocket attached to it. This was my old Saab. Very comfortable car, air con, cruise con, everything else con., you name it this car had it. I fashionably fitted a Viggen exhaust system to it, induction kit, strut braces, new bushes, new turbo lines, new brake hoses, dump valve, etc. Eventually, the car was able to challenge Porsche 911 in a straight line, and it sounded awesome. Sadly, it was still a boat, and it was almost dangerous to drive around corners. It was also a monster on the pocket as it cost me nearly a tenner a day to get to work and back. Also, the gear box was on it’s way out, so I had to get rid. Managed to get rid of it at Fords of Winsford, and did a straight swap for …

#7: V plate electric blue Citroen Saxo 1.8 16v VTS:

I have no idea why I bought this car. It was a loutish, boy racer-ish and noisy. Also, made by the French. Horrible build quality, funny looking engine bays. However, it absolutely rocked. De-catted, stainless system fitted, ram air induction. It regularly cornered on three wheels, and was stupidly quick for such a small car. It had no torque, but didn’t need it as it weighed as much as a Pepperami. Soon after completing my usual modifications, I moved to Manchester, where I promptly lost my job, and the car then sat for nearly a year before I decided to get rid. Sold to the first bidder on a Saxo Owners Club forum. Next day and 900 quid up, I was less one small French car.

#8: P plate white Renault Laguna 2.0 RT:

Have had faster peddle boats. That would corner better. And lasted longer. This horrendous shed was given to me by the in-laws, to see me through last Xmas. Sadly, it lasted until 3 weeks ago, when I got my current runner …

#9: N plate montego blue Mazda MX-5 Gleneagles:

Hurrah! This is what I have been looking for, for the last … 8 cars! At last, a car that appreciates me, and that I appreciate. It’s good on my pocket, great in my hands, and it sings to me when I ask it to. If I get too hot, it cools me down. And if I’m cold, it keeps me warm! It makes people laugh, then soon after, cry. It’s everything that I want in a motor vehicle. Well, apart from being able to carry two mountain bikes. But that wouldn’t look very cool, would it?

Well here’s my list (if you can call it that) since i’m only 21 lol

#1 03 Reg black Renault Clio 1.2 Authentique:

I got this at 17 (in 2005) as my first car, was really slow, no a/c or anything but had a decent blaupunkt cd/sat nav put in it. Still it was a good first car, had relatively cheap insurance and only had one problem with it during my time of ownership. I never did any modding to it or anything like some of my other friends did to theirs mainly because I didn’t want to spend a load of money modding a car that at the end of the day would always be crap. [:P] I then traded it in for my current car.

#2 06 Reg winning blue Mazda Mx-5 2.0i

Once I traded in my clio, 10 days ago lol, I got my mx-5. Although I’ve only had it a few days I’ve been really enjoying it, it’s a much more fun car to drive in every way and I find it more comfortable as well. Managed to have the roof down lots thanks to the lack of rain. Only time i’ve driven it with the top up so far was on the day I collected it to drive back home. Like my clio it doesn’t have a/c which would be nice to have but in this car I can live without it since the roof down gives me all the air I need.

I have posted this before, but this time I’ve added some notes and pics—

  2. £3300 1986 - 93 old old y reg 1983 Honda Accord 1.6 saloon, really awesome, no, i mean it, so reliable, so quiet, no pas though…took it from 33-107k, sold for nearly nothing after the windscreen surround rusted!

  3. £5500 1993 - 95 old g reg 1989 Honda Accord 2.0 exi, all thetoys, cruise, aircon, even anti lock brakes, reliable, fast, until its end was met on the A1, towing our caravan…

  4. £3000 1995 - 2000 old c reg 1986 Volvo 740GLE Estate, massive, bought for towing caravan mainly but economy not bad, 41mpg on one run. This one grew worse for wear after 180k miles, so was replaced by…but first

  5. £350 1996 - err 1996 old old x reg 1982 fiesta 1.1, as a second car, a pile of poo, especially galling as we bought it off caravanning “friends”! Suspension just snapped one day so, like no 2 above, sold off our front garden for £75!

  6. £1625 2000 - 04 old g reg 1989 Volvo 740 GLE injection estate, again for caravan use, cost a blooming fortune to maintain, in end had to be scrapped after being hit whilst parked twice…those who did those deeds will be one body part short one day…

co,lours - solid red, metallic green, metallic grey, metallic bronze, rusty white, metallic maroon, metallic dark blue, metallic dark green and brg, lovely colour for mx…

OK, this history has some photos

1990-1991. First up, 1981 x-reg ex-Gas Board Mini 850 van. I slapped on a chrome bumper and grill. I should have really instead spent time on the brakes, which totally failed on the A1… University of Tennessee was my Alma mater.

1991-1994. PhD jalopy; 1983 A-reg VW Polo Classic; the one with the boot. Utterly reliable, never failed to start, even on a PhD’s stipend.

1994-1996. PhD CASE award blow-out. 1984 B-reg Vauxhall Cavalier Sri. I got a rather late supplementary cheque when I only had about 2 months left in  the lab, so I splurged out. Ok,

  1. First Post-doc car. Foolishly I listened to my PhD supervisor, and brought a V8 heap while postdoc’ing in the US. A 1985 Mercury Cougar with the 302 V8. I kidded myself it was like a Mustang, but ugly. It sort of looked like this, but was Ford Granada Brown

This might well have been the PO (I found his arrest papers in the glovebox)

I traded as quickly as posible for a 1991 Honda CRX HF. CRX aficionados will know this is either the worst CRX to buy, or the best. Worst, because it was a strangled high economy, low power California model, with low gearing (really fun to drive, 60mp US gallon, in a country where gas cost me 75 cents a gallon). Best, because it was ultra-light weight (no back seat, no electrics, no sunroof, special lightweight seats), and had brilliant gearing, so HFs are getting their motors ripped out, replaced by 2.2 lumps…

1997-1997: Upon return to the UK, I got hold of a 1987 Peugout 309 Gti. Fast, but unreliable.

1997-2000. Then I moved to a 1992 Eunos Roadster, after being unsuccessful in tracking down a CRX… Day after I collected it, fresh off the boat

This had a nice spec; 15 Watanabes, 4-2-1 RS*R manifold, Fujitsubo FGK exhaust, Mm’s Intake, Tokico Club shocks. Not that I knew any of this when I brought it.

Ended in tears, during a club meeting in early 2000; 3 MX5s busted into (including a new member…), and mine taken, raced and torched. Look away now.

So the original SAZ9961 appeared on the scene, a 1991 Roadster; eventually it acquired Tanabe 4-2-1 header, Mongoose exhaust, Racing Beat street springs on factory Bilsteins, S-Spec door cards, RB style bar, then swapped for Okuyama 6-point rollbar. Wheels went from 17" weights, to 14" Wats, and finally 15" factory Enkeis. HKS intake. Good car, ended up being resprayed in 2004, then sold in 2005.

2000 (3 weeks after purchase):

Later on in 2000

2002

2003 I think, at Silverstone

2004, and now retired from Sprints etc, smartened up, resprayed, and holding the club flag pole up

  1. While SAZ9961 was being painted, I brought a 1985 Mercedes 190. I really liked that car, despite a collapsing drivers seat, and bouncy front shock. Very solid. Sold when I realised I wasn’t using SAZ9961 as much.

  2. Then I brought the S-Spec 2. For while, there were two Roadsters about, but mainly because it took 3 months for the DVLA to issue a correct age related plate for the old SAZ9961. So the new SAZ9961 emerged, with a few bits immediately transferred over:

And over the years, its had a few changes; bilsteins made way for Apex’i shocks, which made way for the full P5 Puredrive setup. And a new front bumper. Surpisingly, the engine effectively died at 210k kms (brought in 2005 with 90k kms) in 2008, now on 230k kms, with a much younger engine out of a RS Limited. And the car has just emerged from a repaint. Most recent pictures:

In 2006, I acquired another Roadster, a rather rare M2-1002 edition (100 built, 2 known in the UK). This particular one had also been breathed on by Mazdaspeed.I had this for about 18 months, got it to a semi presentable state, but sadly, it needed more work than I had time for. As it was in my hands:

http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n109/saz9961/M2-1002/?action=view&current=M21002.flv

This car was eventually acquired by Sam Goodwin, and is just emrging from a year long full restoration, reuniting it with the proper front bumper, and interior fittings. I was gobsmacked when I saw it last week. It has the makings of probably the nicest Mk1 in the country.

There are some happy memories associated with these old cars!

  1. 1979 Mini 1000, Pageant Blue: Tuned the engine to 998 Cooper spec, lovely car.

  2. 1987 Mini Advantage, White: Re-sprayed it black, dropped in a 1275 Cooper engine.

  3. 1993 Mini Cooper, Red (white roof): A graduation gift from my parents, wrote it off after three weeks. They still give me grief about that one!

  4. 1985 Peugeot 205 Diesel, penance for killing the Mini!

  5. 1993 Renault Clio RSI, Black: I desperately wanted a Williams Clio.

  6. 1998 Subaru Impreza Turbo, Red: Awesome car.

  7. 1997 Mazda MX5 Classic, Black: Wanted something cheap and Rwd when we got back from living in Australia.

  8. 2004 Mazda MX5 Euphonic, Red: Looked at getting an Elise, VX220 and even an MR2, but the Mazda came out on top!

  9. 2009 On order - Mazda MX5 Sport Tech, Red: Went into the Mazda dealer to get a 69p trim screw and came out with a new car! I’ve been considering a nearly new Boxster or waiting for the Nissan 370Z Roadster to be launched, but decided the MX5 ticked all the boxes and won’t break the bank.

 Hi

this is my first post - and perhaps a brief introduction to myself.  Here is a list of my car history

1995-1996 : VW Golf 1.3L (1987 model)

1996-1997 : Vauxhall Corsa 1.2L (1995 model)

1997 - 2003 : Toyota MR2 T-bar (mark I, 1990 model)

2003 - 2005 : Vauxhall VX220 2.2litre NA (2000 model)

2005 - 2007 Smart Roadster Coupe 0.7L (2004 model)

2007 - 2009 Mini Cooper S 1.6S (2004 model)

2009 -          Mazda Eunos 1.6L (1991 model)

Loving the Eunos and slowly trying to put right all the small things that need doing.  Only owned for 4 weeks - but really enjoying this car.

G’day mate, welcome to the forum

Ignoring various bikes owned in the early years, it goes something like this:

1991 Old X reg 1.6 Cavalier GL, Burgundy, end of prduction line model with lots of GLS goodies fitted. Didn’t do much with it except fit twin Weber carbs. Made no diiference but I felt better about the car. Died after a couple of years when the naughty rust monkeys got to it. Replaced, at short notice with…

1995, an A reg Fiesta Poplar Plus 1.1, red, (for some reason the Plus made a difference). Actually not a bad car, and I had the bikes for thrills. Car died in a head on smash and had roof cut off (technically my first cabriolet, but the less said about this incident the better)

2000, an L reg Vauxhall Corsa 1.4, burgundy again (just coincidence) Nothing really to say about this car. Functional and no complaints. Got bored though so

2001 an R Reg Megane Coupe Sport. Quite nice car. Electric everything. Canary yellow which I liked ( always had a thing about yellow cars. All my Project Gotham cars are yellow)  I digress.

2003 Saw the light and bought a Y reg Mk 2 1.8 iS in red (nearly bought the California model next to it on account of my love of yellow cars). Just before the facelift model. Loved it to bits, had many a great journey in that. After a couple of years it started needing a few things doing, and I didnt have the time, and for some reason I thought some more power would be good, so …

2005 Subaru Imprexa WRX ‘55’ plate. Silver, hated the colour, will never buy another silver car in my life. Just my preference, I know there are lots of nice silver 5’s out there. WRX was a cliche maybe but my word you had to hang on to your hat.

2005 missus gets pregnant, doesn’t like the harsh ride in the WRX.

2005 Astra Sport Hatch 2.0 Turbo ‘56’ plate dark Blue. Nice car, bit boring maybe, missus okay with the ride. Bit of a power drop from the Impreza’s 230 to 170 BHP. Power much more useable than the WRX. Can’t fit all the baby things in it. Bugger.

2006 Mondeo estate 2. TDCI. Mr 2.4. Seriously though this is a great car and I still have it, and probably always will. Is this the end…No!

2007, Wife has to give up company car. i see the opportunity to get another convertible. Have to compromise and go for 4 seats. Go for Megane CC 1.6. Big mistake. Horrible car. Broke down 3 times in the 3 weeks from when I bought it. Totally gutless in the 1.6 guise.

2008 go for practicality and get a Focus 1.8 TDCi, the Wife won’t drive the estate as it is too big and so it becomes my daily drive.

  1. Last out as long as I can before my automotive needs become too great. Convince the wife that I need a car I can enjoy. Acknowledge that we need the estate as a family car, and she can keep the focus. So can I get a cheap car as a toy. I wear her down into submission. So the choice is mine. I have tried and owned lots of different cars in my time so what do I choose as my toy of choice…

what would it be…

Of course I went for another MX-5 and am now the happy owner of a Mk1 1.8. it was close at one point though when I had a cheap bid on a Mitsi GTO twin turbo on Ebay that nearly made it. Glad it didnt in the end though. Having tried a number of varieties of car, I know where my preference lies.

I think now there will always be a MX-5 in the family.

Not quite as great as you lot but here goes

17year old - Seat Ibiza SE 1.4 1997

17year old - Fiat Punto Sporting 1.2 2002

18year old - Seat Ibiza Sport 100 1.2 2005

21year old - Mazda MX-5 Sport 2.0ltr 2009!!!

 Hello All,

  2. Ford Cortina 1.6

  3. Triumph TR7 - wrapped it round a lampost - broke the car completly in half!

  4. Ford Capri 1.6 - very tail happy

  5. Mini Metro - oops

  6. Ford Capri 1.6 Laser

  7. Opel Manta 1.8 Berlinetta - one of my favorite cars

  8. Rover 215

  9. Honda Prelude 2.0 - nice car

  10. Ford Focus 1.6

  11. MX5

Let’s think now…

Austin 1300 - RYX 4L 1985-1987 at Uni - perfect  - still around???

Mini 1000 - free from colleague after replacing radiator.  About two weeks ownership sold for 100.

Toyota Celica ST Liftback (I think) very rusty but brilliant 1988-1990

Peugeot 405 SRi (company car) 1990-1994 - not bad

Capri 2.0S 1994-1997 - lovely

Austin Montego EFi Van den Plas Estate - 1997-1999 some power and acceleration again

VW Polo - 1999-2002 very very average but fun, wife’s learner car.

BMW 320 - 2002-2006 - nice but vague steering, ripped off by ‘specialist’ garage on service

Saab 9-5 - ebay purchase, 2005-2009 - just brilliant smooth relaxed but powerful

Current - Renault Laguna 3.0 v6 - workhorse, not convinced yet

Current - MX5 97 1.8iS - the best yet, sweet…

This won’t take long…

  1. 2009 - ??? X reg MX-5 mk2, British Racing Green. Fantastic car - haven’t stopped fiddling with it yet!

That’s it. My '5 is my first car! But I did spend about 3 years driving my girlfriend’s 51 reg 1 litre Corsa around before that. Quite a nice car, for what it is… Reasonable handling, good brakes, perfect reliability… Just a shame about the 1 litre engine!

Last time this thread came around, I made a list of all the cars I’d driven as well (was about 10 to 15, I think…) but that’s probably excessive!

Apparently your orange 1300 met its end in 1991.
