2006 nc should I upgrade the cams and if so where?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Hi all, I have a 2006 nc 2.0 mx5. I have recently fitted a bbr manifold with sports car and other than that the car is standard . (Apart from eibach springs and yellow dot arbs )

Before I get it mapped I was wondering if anyone recommended fitting cams ? I use the car for fun on road and a few track days a year .

I’m on the lookout for a decent 2nd hand back box before it’s mapped too

I live in Hertfordshire and if anyone can recommend some where to take it to be mapped that would be ace.

It’s something I often consider, however the bang for buck gains of performance cams has put me off.

Once you get your remap done (if done well) you’re likely to gain a good 25bhp +, not to metion the vastly improved driveability.

I did exactly what you did over 5 years ago and live my mapped mx5. The manifold and remap cost a grand, but in my opinion is worth it.

Looking at cams, it’s an extra grand or so for 10-15 bhp.

I’ve not taken the plunge.

Why not get your map done and then see how you get on?

Thanks for your fast response.

I just figured rather than doing two maps is it worth getting the cams first if that makes sense?
I don’t mind fitting the cams myself and then getting some one to map it when it’s finished .

Maybe I should just get the mapping done first like you say.

Is there any good places to get it done anywhere near Hertfordshire?

why not buy camshafts off BBR and have them map it for you with your manifold you will have the equivalent of their 200 package

Hi scorps, yes that’s what I was thinking and was just wondering if it’s worth fitting the cams or if anyone else had them ?

I have cams it made the power all through the rev range nice if you short shift through the gears

If you’re confident fitting the cams yourself then it does make sense, as you’d only be paying for the parts and 1 remap.

Once you’ve done this you’re pretty much done regarding NA engine performance gains.

Yeah I am tempted with them - I don’t fancy the cost / possible problems with turbos etc especially for track days do I think cams and a map should be me done ……

It sounds like you’re already nearly halfway to a Super200 setup. I’ve had my Super200 NC for nearly 2 years, it’s a great setup and retains the characteristics of the Duratec engine, it also makes a great track setup. It makes 205bhp and 168 lb ft so is a healthy increase over the std 160bhp, the rev limit is also increased by 500rpm.

Go for it!

Sounds good - I guess that’s what I need to do!
Just need to find a decent back box and that should be me sorted !

Here is a table of some different cams available. I was looking to do a 2.5L swap, but went turbo instead.

Might be of some use to you, but as always no one knows BBR specs.

Oh that’s interesting, I did not know there were so many different options of cams! The bbr ones are pretty expensive in comparison.

Re backbox I swapped from stock to the cobalt and very pleased with it.

Just an FYI - i had a quote from BBR GTI to supply map and fit the performance cams on my NC for £1500 - not a bad price tbf

Hmm that is temping hey. Did you have it done?

im in the middle of getting quotes for the CAMS and ITBS

Oh that’s interesting- who else out there does them ?

you can get them here and have them fitted
High Performance Pair of Camshafts to suit Mazda MX5 NC 2.0 VCT Engine (danstengineering.co.uk)

i believe these guys will also…
Performance Link | Mazda modification and tuning specialists

Oh they seem to be a fair bit cheaper are they not?

Actually booked in for April’ to have the BBR cams and mapping …. Did you get yours done ?
