- My model of MX-5 is:a 2017 RF
- I’m based near:Portsmouth
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Heavy rattle when roof is fully open and car is moving. Thanks in anticipation!
Could you describe a bit more as to where is it coming from?
Behind the seats? Passenger side?
outside car?
etc
Hi, best guess is behind seats, I suspect somewhere amongst the roof operating levers etc. this only occurs when roof is open. The rattle sounds metalic. I can’t tell which side though.
Thanks this sounds more like metal on metal.
have you investigated? taken someone with you to see if you can zone in on the source?
Does the noise increase in intensity or frequency as the speed goes up/down? I wonder if it is something that has come loose and the airflow is making it rattle.
Thanks all I have decided that the issue is likely caused by items associated with the operation of the roof mechanism, so I will investigate with the roof in various stages of opening/closing and when I find it I will report back
I’ll have a look when I get in the car to see what could possibly be causing it. I have noticed that some of the arms are covered in a felt-like material/tape, so likely won’t be those.
Thank you.
Yes my wife was with me, but she is not so adept at tracking down spurious mechanical noises from behind her in a new(to us) car.
Think I have a plan now, will report back with my findings, thank you.
Good afternoon I am pleased to report that the heavyish rattle from behind the passenger space was traced to toothed crank rattling against it’s neighbour and with a squirt of graphite grease it was gone, I hope! only to be replaced by another one , this time under the dash towards the centre left of the car, again when the car is moving. Before I start pulling the car apart, again can anyone help.
Thanks again .
Steve
