What sim are you playing in? All the AC mods for the track kinda suck and I’m certain the scans for it in iRacing are ancient (I don’t own it).

I only use it to get a feel for track layouts…mainly use ACC for uk tracks

@TheLoraxxZeus, what about Forrestburn and Crail?

Forrestburn seems almost secret but it’s brilliant. It’s a hillclimb track so you can’t do ā€œlapsā€, you do a run and then roll down an access road to the start and go again. But it’s a brilliant wee track, huge height changes, pretty technical- it barely ever goes straight. Plus it’s cheap, though you have to join the club. Different experience to normal tracks but it’s absolutely superb for setting up or for practice, and you never have to worry about traffic. At the start of the day there’s always a queue so the laps are a bit slow but by the end everyone’s got tired and so you pretty much never wait. Near Harthill so pretty easy for anyone to get to.

And Crail, well, everyone knows about Crail and its randomness but it’s still a good day, and dirt cheap.

Never been there in the mx5, the subaru is better at going fast  But I’ll get it up there this year for sure. But the MX5’s been totally rebuilt- new engine, new suspension- so it’ll need some setting up, so Forrestburn first I think. Should have the car back on the road by mid may with any luck

jmho and from my experience I prefer using more ā€œexpensiveā€ operators with absolutely no boyracer policy. Its much safer for everyone if the people you share the track with know what they are doing and IMHO its better to learn your car and improve your skills in that environment.
Far less red flags = more time available to drive and
fewer issues on track overtaking/being overtaken = safer.

Oh and if you see a young chap in a clio or a fiesta with a pops and bangs map leave some gap… a large gap…

Blyton Park on the 27th of April. Going to give my new coilovers a good trying out

I need to give the whole car a good shakedown lol…new to 5 ownership. May try 27th

Car won’t be ready so… I have a trackday with opentrack for sale.
Its at Anglesey (Coastal & GP Circuit) with a garage on Sun 19th May 24, (now fully booked)
paid £209

Hotel, The Bull Hotel, single room with breakfast, paid £75
sums to 284

would take 265 all in or 190 just for the trackday (I can cancel the hotel for free)

The hotel address is at London Road The Bull Hotel, Valley, LL65 3DP, United Kingdom (its about 15 min drive)

thanks
George

EDIT: now gone

Good suggestions, however there is no danger I am taking a stock MX-5 to the drag strip hahaha. For that kinda of thing I want something that will melt my face.

Forrestburn I am not sure about, not a lot of room for error on those tight roads, no run offs.

It’s not just drags (and drifting) at Crail, they lay out a track on the old runways. It’s flat as a pancake and high speed more than technical, but still good fun, and cheap. It’s semi-open-pit, they restrict the numbers on track but you can pretty much come in and out as you want which takes most traffic stress off too. They vary the layout a wee bit but looking at vids it’s been pretty much the same overall track shape for a decade.

Downsides, the runway surface is ww2-old and it’s deteriorating, apparently they’re not allowed to resurface as the airfield is listed. So it’s harder on tyres than you’d expect. And because they lay out the track with tyres it’s actually weirdly close in places (it doesn’t really have to be, you can run further away from the walls and take inside lines etc, but in practice I get sucked out near the tyres every time)

This video gives a good feel of the track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0alGjatJ3g. I haven’t run the MX5 there, I took the legacy which probably suits the fast track better but my mate was in his naturally aspirated Impreza and still had a blast despite it being fairly slow.

Forrestburn I can just totally recommend, it’s pure MX5 country. You’re right that there’s not much runoff in places, but the speeds are relatively slow as it’s so twisty so it balances out mostly. And the pace of the day is randomly good- the single laps takes the stress out of it, you’re never ragged like you can be on longer sessions on a normal track I love it tbh. I’ve done it in the subaru and the mx5 (complete with ****ed engine, at the time) and it was great in both but the subaru was just a bit too fast for my brain, could be a bit frantic, in the 5 I could play.

They do autocross as well for something different, though I’ve never done that.

Right, kinda sold on that. I will look and see whats coming up. The track doesn’t look too bad but yeah it’s certainly not smooth haha.

I for the life of me can’t find information on Crail pricing, any links? Website doesn’t have anything except dates.

It was £35 last time we were there, I think. And no memberships or anything

Oh, one thing I hadn’t considered, their rules say they require a roll bar for soft tops (I have a PRHT, hadn’t really thought about it). So that could be a problem for some people, depending on how they enforce it and the old ā€œwhat counts as a roll barā€

I’m not sure if I’ll have hte car together in time for the next open track but we’re planning on the august one for sure

Ā£35 for like 20 minutes or does that get you full event/track day access?! Seems like a great low cost way to shake the car down before I go for the pricier full day stuff on bigger circuits.

Goodwood in July for me. First time on there, hope it’s worth the 4/5 hrs mission!

I disagree on that being low cost lol. £35 for 20 minutes, £105 for an hour. You can go to knockhill at night for £115 which gives you two hours on a full track that is properly paved with real run offs.

If you mean you just go for 20 minutes to see how the car is? I see the appeal in that but even then, what will you learn in 20 minutes? Assuming 20 minutes is pure track time and no break.

honestly avoid ā€œcheap thilsā€ and action days. most that do that kind of stuff have no idea what they are doing, go on full chat with cold tyres, and unprepared/unchecked cars (may be leaking, shite tyres/brakes or things hanging off them).

Rather pay your money and try learn from the experience, have fun in a safe controlled manner. and the more money you pay the more value you get because the people who you will share the track will have an idea or two how to drive.
IMHO of course

Haha, no I thought it was £35 for the day, which seemed way too good to be true. £35 for 20 is about what I paid for time on silverstone, so would be much less interested.

I am away to Knockhill on the 15th of May for my first track day in my Mk1. I have meisterr zeta crd coilovers, uniroyal rainsport 5 tyres and ebc yellowstuff pads. I am doing a complete cooling refresh and timing belt this weekend to prepare.

Sweet. I might actually see you there. Is your MK1 green?..
