Got 40 MPG on a return trip from Dorset to the Silverstone Classic in my 30 year old 240,000 km Mk1, so quite happy with that.
On a decent run, I can get 37mpg from my 2008 2.0L Sport NC, but around town, short journeys with oodles of gearchanges, more like 30 mpg.
These fuel consumption figures obtainable from ND models are just stunning, and indeed my wife’s 2.0L Mazda 3 can return similar figures.
30 - 37 mpg is not really a problem for me though, as the MX-5 is a ‘toy’ if you like, and normally only used for pleasure in nice weather, when I can put the PRHT down. Same reason really that I use Shell V Power petrol - expensive, yes, but with the low mileages covered with the MX-5, not a problem.
My 2.0 litre ND2 is just coming up to three years old, the odo reads 21678 and fuel used so far is 537 gallons which equates to 40 mpg. Given that I’m not averse to using the car’s performance when the opportunity arises I think that’s remarkable.
Peaks & Pennines had a technical night at Roddesons recently with the subject of fuel being discussed. Paul showed us the cylinder head off an ND with about 34k miles on “supermarket” fuel. It was horribly gummed up.
Paul recommends V Power and I must say that I am a great believer in V Power myself, especially for the ND which has a compression ratio of 14:1. Well worth the extra money and it pays dividends in the long run.
As for fuel consumption, an overall 40mpg is easily obtained in the ND but my ND1 was a couple of mpg better than the ND2 (both autos). However, if I was that interested in fuel consumption I’d drive a diesel Golf not an MX5.
Wish I got 40 mpg average! I am running Vpower now on Rodders recommendation for last 7 fill-ups but I haven’t seen any MPG improvement although that could be down to the naff Falken tyres. Or the fact it spend most of the previous 2 years on Sainsbury’s unleaded (I know, I know…). Last year I spent more on bloody repairs and servicing and tyres than fuel though!

If you are an Android user I recommend Fuelio as a good free app; you can log everything like tyres, insurance, repairs, servicing so it becomes a service record in your pocket. But if you log all your fillups expect to be horrified at how much any car costs to run!
My 2.0 NC averages around 31mpg; slightly more on a long cruise
Today I went brim to brim on the tank (rather than using the onboard mpg computer) and achieved 44.2 mpg.
90% of the time I was on dual carriageways doing 55-60mph in 5th. The other 10% was town driving. The top (PRHT) was up, the temp outside was 8C, the AC was off and I had E10 in the tank.
My MX5 is a 2011 NC3.5 2.0l 5 speed SE PRHT with 26K on the clock. Given how sedately I drove today, I doubt I’ll ever get any better than that.
NC BBR185 & I get around 31mpg … must try harder… then again… nahhh! I rather have fun with it
i dont have a figure , if i cared id got a diesel… smash it down the motorway at 85 cruise… no bother
Similar here, just under 33mpg this winter with an up to 180 map.
Should obviously improve in the warmer weather, probably an extra 5-6mpg but as you say it’s not a concern, it’s the enjoyment factor.
Can get into mid 36’s, but 28’s if a sprited run.
2011 2.0L NC2 152k on the clock. Mapped (map 2), header and rear box mods.
Haven’t tried a steady run on map 1 yet. Who knows, might get into the 40’s
36 generally, but 40 on a long, steady run. NC 2008 2.0 Sport with 105,000 miles. I do not drive like the so called Miss Daisy, so I think 36 is reasonable, using Shell V- Power.
I keep a regular check on mpg and notice that since we had to use E10 the mpg has dropped from my average of 44-45 mpg to 39-41 mpg, best I had before was 54 mpg on a long run keeping to 65mph on cruise control.
To double check the mpg I filled with E5 and immediately it went back up to 44 mpg. This is on an ND 2.0 ltr auto.
Sports Black - The best I’ve had is 32 MPG. I suppose I don’t drive it like Miss Daisy but then I didn’t buy it for the ECO mode!
I’m (was yesterday) at the moment around 27.4mpg on my nc
Was +/- 50 MPG on E5. Dropped to +/- 42 on E10. ND
Normally around 43mpg, over 20k miles hasn’t varied much (ND2 2litre).
But yesterday’s Solent run showed average 50.9mpg - at around 2/3 point it had averaged 51.7!
Shocking! So much for being greener…
My NC is not as dramatic, but loses between 3 to 4 mpg on E10. The trouble is that E5 on my last visit on Sunday morning was £1.93, with E10 at £1.63! As I am not using it too much lately, and against my better judgement, it got a squirt of E10. Maybe by the time I have to put some more in, then hopefully prices will have stabilised - one has to have a positive outlook, eh…?
Yeah, thread revival! Hurray!
Since getting my car (1.8 litre NC3.75 PRHT) back on the road after a 30 months hiatus, I have seen my mpg improve week by week.
I assume the ecu has re-learned how to be efficient.
And forgotten about the months of abuse it had suffered at the hands of the previous owner…
He was a nice guy, but he would rev the engine like crazy before releasing the clutch, and before changing gear. Not to go faster either…
I am now averaging 41.5 mpg. And getting 43 mpg at motorway speeds.
I will be tempted to carry out an ecu reset on any used car I buy from now on.
I have a 2.0 sport NC. Out of curiosity, what do people get out of a tank full?
