I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ An extra hand!
Just tried fitting my SmartTop roof module. I managed to remove the access panel, but got a “Fail” when I tried to remove the existing bottom wiring clip.
I’d like to know which contortionist with a dark sense of humour located that clip where they did! It is marked by the red arrow on this piccie. But the clip to push in is on the back side, with very limited access. I find I simply can’t push it in, and also wriggle the electrics loom clip loose.
Does anyone have any thoughts, other than “grow an extra hand”?
I found it easier removing the metal plate in front of the module , and I think got to the clip with a stubby flat blade if I remember correctly . Hope this helps
Have a look at the recent update by @David-Hhere.
I found it impossible to unplug the required connector with the OEM controller in-situ, and so resorted to removing the 10mm AF mounting frame bolts. With that loose, it was just possible to wriggle the module out, rotate it to access the securing clip, slide a thin jewellers screwdriver that I had ground down earlier to resemble a very thin chisel to release the locking tab and finally pull the offending connector out. After that, everything was easy-peasey.
when I had the module I used a set of long nosed pliers but I have removed this now and upgraded to the MX5Things a far smarter roof controller …with key fob remote controller
How do you find the MX5Things roof controller? Thinking of getting one myself for my RF.
Seen a few people say they get a random roof malfunction error while driving which disappears after a few seconds.
Be sure to tick the correct ND edition, viz ND1-2 or ND3.
The price has gone up since I bought mine a few months ago such are the joys of buying an import. Ships from California but they do give tracking info.
My MX5 is an NC2 and touch wood (hand on head) this gizmo is working well, love it. No idea how you’ll get on fitting it in an RF but access on the NC was dire until we just took the existing module out of its lair (I hadn’t read of anyone doing this before) hence benfieldl’s comment above, the link will take you to my photos.
Best of luck
I’m not sure if reports of roof malfunction errors in this country are due to software issues but I contacted MX5Things in the USA and they sent me an EU software update for the initial install and it hasn’t missed a beat.
Before its last dealer service before the warranty expired I put it back to factory operation, then switched back for the drive home
To quickly change the configuration from one-touch to OEM mode or Valet mode use this sequence:
Turn the car power off.
Keep driver side door open.
Enable the programmed one-touch operation for a key fob: Push roof switch up and hold it in
position. Click the “Unlock” button on the key fob twice. Release the roof switch.
Disable the programmed one-touch operation for a key fob: Push roof switch down and hold it in
position. Click the “Unlock” button on the key fob twice. Release the roof switch.
yes I have had that error if I have not operated the roof for some time I just let the car run for a few mins warm up then open close the roof via the interior switch and the problem goes away generally its the winter month I got this but not for some time now Never had it when driving only on start up…to get it to work from the key fob you need to buy all 3 parts
Well done and yes it is fine upgrade. As a lot of folk have said, this is what Mazda should have offered in the first place.
As a matter of interest did you manage to disconnect the white plug in situ or as I did, remove the whole gubbins from the recess do the disconnect and reconnect then bolt the unit back in the recess?
I did it all in situ, while doable was a bit of a pain.
If that plastic back panel came straight off, I could have done it in 10 minutes instead of 20.
