mazda keyless

A Mazda dealer should be able to supply the parts from your VIN. Programming at a dealer will depend on the diagnostic machine communicating with an American spec car and the system the dealers use to obtain the immobiliser In Code accepting the details obtained from your vehicle. I’d ask the dealer to check the latter on your car before ordering the key.

thanks - phone conversation with Oxford Mazda dealer ended with discussion about frequencies

315 Megahertz US
433 Megahertz UK

so he’s checking it out on his end, while here, I’m trying to do same

If they supply the correct part that shouldn’t make any difference. UK spec MX-5 never had advanced keyless entry so they wouldn’t be able to supply you a “UK spec” advanced key.

True - when dealer looked up part numbers, they were marked USA - however, how the transmitter is programmed, I’m not sure. I have read about opening and closing of doors, but my USA Mazda dealer just emailed me, " As for the key and programming it, I’m not too sure how it’s done without the proper Mazda equipment. From what i know, a computer/scanner is hooked up to the OBD in the car, and then a “key CODE” is generated from the mazda database i guess, as for the rest of the process I’m not too sure." Finally as regards CHIP in EMERGENCY KEY, I have zero idea of how that is handled - apparently not as simple as just cutting blank key at locksmith…

The keys are programmed using M-MDS (Mazda Modular Diagnostic System). If the software in the UK system will communicate with your car, information is taken from the car’s immobiliser system, this is input into an online system which generates an In Code. This In Code is then input into M-MDS which allows access to the vehicle’s immobiliser system and allows programming of both the advanced key and the emergency key.

I don’t think the opening and closing of doors that is used to code a non-advanced keyless entry type key (retractable type key) is applicable to an advanced keyless entry system like you have.

I think this is precisely what my UK dealer is checking, which comes down to frequencies, his opinion. Two questions: 1) what happens if this does not work?? is their alternative method of programming?Like open and closing or doors, or “cloning” of key, using the 1 fob I still have left? and 2) what about emergency key, if it has right chip, must anything be done to his other than cut blade? Thanks!

As far as I know there is no method for adding a new key without using M-MDS for advanced keyless entry cars. I’ve no knowledge of cloning advanced keys. The emergency key would be coded to the car as part of the procedure for coding the advanced key.

For non advanced keyless entry systems there is an option for allowing the customer to add keys themselves if they already had 1(?) valid key, the option would need activating using M-MDS though.

Well, I hope I don’t have to ship my car all the way back to the States, just to get a spare key!

If you search around a bit on this forum people have obtained software for coding keys to UK cars, not sure if this would work on yours though.

thanks very much for all your help, I’ll see what local dealer has to say…
