Air Con Compressor stopped working - NB 2.5

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NB 2.5 (2003)
  2. I’m based near: Reading Berks
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on why my AC clutch won’t engage after replacing the Compressor.

I’m after some help please?

NB 2.5 .

Changed the Air Con Compressor as it was very noisy. Fitted replacement (a few sheared bolts etc) Now there is no feed to the clutch. The fan powers up when the AC is turned on but the clutch won’t engage. Checked all fuses (and relays as far as I can) Just doesn’t seem to be any power to the clutch. Clutch engages when powered directly , so its not the replacement. It all worked before with the old one, but when I connect the old one again that doesn’t work. So it all suggests a break in the single cable (B/Y) that leads to the clutch .

Any thoughts? or if not anyone know an local Autoelectrician? I am in Woodley, Reading, but happy to travel if you have any recommendations.

Have you checked the wiring properly to the relays behind the LH headlamp? The ones on the plastic upright.

Thanks for this. I can see which relays you are talking about but my knowledge/skill level doesn’t extend to how to test these? What would you suggest?

Just have a look at the wiring to them, it has a tendency to corrode and break of at the connection.

Sorry if I’m asking the stupidly obvious, but did you have the system pressure tested and then vacuum tested before filling with the correct amount of oil and refrigerant?
Low refrigerant pressure equals no clutch energising.
Likewise I hope you had any refrigerant in the system recovered before removing the old compressor. Also if the pipe work was left open the atmosphere for any length of time the absorber should be changed in case any dampness has entered the system.

OK thanks, I will go look

Not stupid or obvious! Thanks for your reply. Honest answer I dont know as the garage I have used for years did the work. So I will go back and see them with your questions and let you know.

Thanks for taking the time to help me

Ah ok, I thought you were doing the work yourself.

Hi Robbie, just checked the wiring to the relays and no obvious signs of wires coming away or corroded

Hi there, had an autoelectrician and AC specialist look at this and it appears the AC sensor is not working so needs replacing. Mazda wont supply this without the pipework at £600+ !!!
Any idea where I might get one (these usually ony cost about £30

Try Prestige. They specialise on your model. Very helpful to me in the past.

If you still need it I may have one if you can send photo of what’s required.

Thanks I contacted them and they are going to look out for one for me. Great recommendation

Hi rutlandsurfer thanks for this. This is the part

I have one I could send you. Second hand obviously but was working when car parked up. I presume you have double checked that you haven’t just lost pressure in system ?

Thanks rutlansurfer That would be great. I have had an expert technician run through all of this and concluded that the sensor is not giving the readings he expects. He has checked everything else and regassed
