Alpine 6.1 fitted to new models "Buyer Beware"

That’s great! I didn’t know that the AVN2 came in other 5’s as well!

If I actually used the screen to look at, I must admit I would have swapped it out long ago. The viewing angles of the display are so bad that in my driving positon, it just looks washed out.

If I can remember, the file I need is from the NAV side of it. If you could just copy all the files from that file folder, I’ll rather just replace your complete working files into my damage structure.

The NAV files don’t affect the Alpine firmware.

I’ve only had the car a couple of weeks, and I normally use Google Maps on my phone for navigation, so I’m happy enough that I can listen to Radio 4 and the music on a USB stick. I plan to do the Alpine update to improve the sound quality, but am giving it a bit more time (in case there are any issues which need to be resolved under warranty).

You’ll need to be a bit more explicit about how to extract the specific files (or where they are in the file structure) - I’ve read this thread, and all 17 pages of the German Mazda forum which are mentioned above, but I haven’t actually done anything with the file system yet…

I did the update when I had the alpine version of the unit in my old golf.

Download and extract the zip file to a usb stick in the root directory.

Plug in to the usb input and you should get a pop up asking to install the update.

It goes through the motions and restarts. Make sure your remove the stick and delete the folder after it it will keep asking you to update etc

To make it easier, use a USB stick that is lying around, not the one you store your media for the head unit, then no worries about deleting etc.

here is alpine link:

https://www.alpine.co.uk/support/software-and-map-updates/navigation-systems/ine-w920r-ine-w925r-ine-w928r-ine-w977bt-firmware-update.html

Having difficulty finding the correct software. looks like they hidden it.

According to post #39 on this German thread the files that you need to reinstall are ALPINNAVI,EXE, DATA.ZIP and BRANDING.ZIP. (There are actually two copes of ALPINNAVI.EXE, one in the APP! directory and one in the APP2 directory - they have different sizes.

I’ve zipped all of these up and put them on my ftp server for you - I’ll send you a link by PM.

According to the same forum, you may also need to do a reset (either using the button behind the removable panel or by choosing “factory reset” from the menu) before the keyboard reappears.

Thanks for the detailed help! Will give it a go later.

Has anyone had any success swapping out the AVN2 for another unit?

A couple of years ago I swapped the the stock radio in my Kuro Edition for a Pioneer SPH-DA130 which was brilliant: CarPlay, DAB, Apple and Google maps, Tidal etc.

When I traded in the Kuro I removed the Pioneer with the intention of installing it in my current car - the 25th Anniversary edition. However, the wiring and connections are completely different and I’m not sure where to start!

Thanks to Philip and going out of his way to help me, I finally have my NAV up and running again and can input an address!!! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Ended up using his system files to replace my corrupted one and now all working.

it shouldn’t be too hard, just got to find the correct patch leads.

Now my NAV is working, anyone know where to get an up to date Speed Cam list?

Can’t help you there I’m afraid.

For info, I’ve just updated my AVN2 using the Alpine firmware and am very happy with the improvements, especially the audio quality. I even managed to reinstate the “25th Anniversary” splash screen. The whole process was a bit nerve-wracking as it seems to take ages and gives very little feedback as to progress.

I still miss having DAB and CarPlay so I might still try swapping it for my Pioneer but at least I’ve got a much more useable system in the meantime.

Many thanks to everyone for the tips - where would we be without the Forum and the internet in general!?

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but having just bought a 25th Anniversary Edition, and discovering the standard sound on the head unit was very thin and shrill, I’ve just updated the firmware as above, and the improvements are incredible! If you have an AVN2 system and haven’t done this yet, I would highly recommend this modification. Sat Nav functionality fully retained, and the sound is now full, bass is deep and strong, and the speakers have come alive.

My splash screen is this

Updating the firmware does indeed make a huge difference.

Nice and simple!

That looks superb! Don’t suppose you have an editable version? Would love to do the same but use 0864 (my 25ae number) :crossed_fingers:

Yeah, no worries. Do you just want the background, an image without the number on it or an image with your number on it?

Just note, this is based on a photo of my wing badge, so I don’t know if I have the correct font for the number, but may find something close to it.

I don’t want to put you out mate, if it’s difficult to amend the number, a numberless version would still be awesome! Thank you so much for this, greatly appreciated :ok_hand:
