Cigarette lighter socket power issue?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __2012 PRHT Venture
  2. I’m based near: __Sheffield
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Cigarette lighter socket power .

I have noticed that the what I would call the lighter socket on our vehicle would appear to be dead, no power supply.

The reason I think this is it doesn’t charge the phone when I plug in the adaptor socket I use in my other vehicle. This adaptor socket has a little blue light that comes on when in use, so there is a visual signal there is power without looking at the phone.

I have spoken with another owner on here and we both thought possibly a fuse issue and on checking the fuse board diagrams, it would appear that the fuse relative to this particular socket is located down in the secondary fuse box down by the passenger footwell and is shown as fuse number 2, AUX PWR Accessory socket.

It is the second fuse down from the top when you get in the box so I got a replacement fuse as the original on taken out seems to be intact.

However, the new 15amp fuse has no effect, so after any advice as to what is the next stage to resolve this issue.

Is the ignition in the on position?
Do you have a ‘multimeter’ so you can check fuses and continuity etc.?

Thanks for that

I’m sure I had the ignition on but going out in it today so will double check.

Not got a multimeter though so not sure what to do next.

Might have a run down to Paul Roddisons in Sheffield and see if he can offer a cure

Another member had a similar problem, if I recall the centre contact weren’t making the connection. Try another known working plug in there.

I have found, like someone else has mentioned that not all charger plugs and plugs for some devices make a proper contact or come lose when driving, it’s just trial and error

I have ended up replacing the 12V sockets with twin USB ports that fit in the original socket hole very nicely. Found them on eBay for less than £10 from memory - I’ve soldered smaller terminals onto the units so that I can use the original clips rather than cutting any wiring - took me all of half an hour to do each car and I even found some that are backlit in the reddish orange colour of the rest of the dash. Now run my phone charger without incident and have a spare port for passengers to use.
