Dean S550 Build Thread

Thanks Dean for your explanation, I’ve seen posts about differences in the PRHT soft top suspension, maybe from factory probably not on aftermarket coilovers.
MeisterR certainly doesn’t show a different when buying for the NC.
I’ve experienced MeisterR CRD’s before on my last NC, I wished I could have transferred them over to this NC. A great deal of faff that would have been, anyways choices to make at a later date.
The CRD’s I played around with also, I think I ended up with something like 8 front and 12 rear from the firm setting on the other NC.
Got a headache coming on now, 30 mins on the phone with Admiral bartering renewal prices, result I’ve renewed again with them.:+1:

I was very close to getting the meisters as everyone raves over them but was concerned they may be too firm, that and I’d seen some corrosion issues and had tein before and was happy with them, especially for the price.

I’ll to continue to update as I drive it more, I’ll be honest as I’m not one to fib just to avoid egg on my face :+1:.

Glad to hear you got your insurance sorted, hoping a-plan/howdens are reasonable to me again or I’ll be ringing admiral and Adrian flux.

I went through the same thought process when I bought my Teins earlier in the year, re the ‘PRHT specific’ question.

There is 35kg difference I believe, between comparable soft top and PRHT models. It occurred to me that you’d get that sort of variance between different sizes of driver (!!) Coupled with the fact that other well lauded options (Meister) don’t offer a differentiation either, I went ahead and have seen no issue or any concern whatsoever, coming upto 3000 miles with them fitted :+1:

I think it’s a testing/compliance caveat as you say Dean.

Exactly my ‘rationale’ if you’d call it that :+1:.

Thanks very much, I appreciate it but I bought this car as much for something to do as to drive it . Hope you’re able to sort insurance for a reasonable price, will give me hope.

Exhaust back box removed, measured up and cut off original tips. Cleaned up rusty hangers and dusted over with vht silver. Fitted up BBR tips

Looks great but I’m guessing absolutely no change in exhaust note :flushed::man_shrugging::man_shrugging::sunglasses::sunglasses::sunglasses::white_check_mark::white_check_mark::white_check_mark:

Probably quite a bit at the moment as I have to fit a new gasket to the back box. It’s on there without one at the moment as I’m impatient.

Once that’s on I will be able to tell. I’m expecting little if any change, might be pleasantly surprised :man_shrugging:t2: but they certainly look better in my opinion :+1:

I had this on my sport tech , sounded awesome

I’m about done with loud exhausts (for now) I’ve had some ridiculous ones over the years. This was on my last car.

Your wheels look great Dean are they Ultralite or Rota? Can I ask what width and offset they are please plus what tyre size you went for and what you think of the Goodyears as they’re one of the tyres I’m considering at the moment? Sorry for all the questions!

No problem Steve. They’re made by rota, they’re called 356 wheels tfs3 and they’re 17x8 et42. Tyres are 215/45. I think you can get very similar in Japan racing jr7 or ultralite f1 but different widths, finish and offsets. I haven’t driven the car in anger yet, I’ve had nothing but rain for so long and on the one dry day I took it out I didn’t go mad as I’m on new brakes, suspension and wheels :+1:. Once the new brakes are bedded in (and we have some decent weather) I’ll give it a good run and push it harder. Oh and thank you, I like them, glad you do too .

Thanks for that Dean, would definitely be good to hear your thoughts on the tyres when the chance comes. I’m in the process of trying to choose wheels and tyres but not getting very far, would like some genuine RPF1’s but they’re not cheap are they!

They absolutely are not! I set myself a rough budget with the car which necessitated being sensible on some things, I basically wanted to bring the car in under what I saw them up for on forecourts, only customised to exactly my liking which I’ve managed to do just about. The fundamental things I wanted are all done now and I’d love to eventually have a bbr turbo kit but have lots of house related things to deal with before that will pass scrutiny with the better half.

And to be honest I’m no circuit racer where every gram counts. If it were that important to me it would be much cheaper to cut out the takeaways than pay out for rpf1’s .

Yeah I think I fall into the takeaway cutting out bracket to!

:joy: Well if you are interested I got them from Driftworks. Black Friday is coming up, not sure if they’ll have any deals but might be worth keeping a check on there.

Yeah definitely keeping my fingers crossed for some Black Friday deals!

For anyone that asked I can update this now. I took the car for a 20 mile drive earlier and am very happy. I took routes with some of the very worst roads I know of, patch repairs, dips, cracks, potholes - you name it. The car behaved itself very well. No cabin rattles either (which I must say shocked me). The tein suspension was a great buy, soaks up bumps and maintains its composure, not bouncy or jittery. Never bottomed out or hit the stops once on even the worst of craters and tyres never touched anything they shouldn’t of. Hard to describe them really - they are clearly much firmer but without being a detriment to comfort which is a really pleasant surprise for coilovers - really quite nice and will be easy to live with (and I have had various different shock/spring and Coilover setups before from apex, eibach, vogtland, tein, pedders, bc etc).

An alignment will definitely be needed soon as firstly I want to maximise the benefits and ensure my tyres last as long as they should and due to the camber from lowering it, steering is a little too quick to react but nothing I’d call overly ‘twitchy’.

IL MotorSport arbs seem to be doing their job nicely but quite hard to say just how much as I fitted them same time as the coilovers so the effects I’m getting are hard to attribute to one thing.

Goodyear eagle f1 as6 are very good. Loads of confidence and quiet.

Mtec drilled brakes and ebc greenstuff were noisy for quite a while but as the coating and brake in layer is being worn away they are quietening down quite a bit. Still not bedded in fully but much better than what I took off.

Hope this info is useful :+1:

And to anyone considering the tein flex z coilovers, they have been put down to £683 for a set in driftworks black Friday sale. Absolute bargain. :sunglasses:
