I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Switchback LED daytime running lights/parking lights.
Hi all,
I have a 2006 NC which I have imported to the Netherlands from Japan. I have a front end off an NC3 including the headlights. I noticed in a lot of videos (especially from the U.S.) people have the indicator lights on as their parking lights, or even daytime running lights in some cases. Some have done the switchback mod which allows them to have white lights on that switch to amber for turn signals or hazard lights.
My car has what I guess you’d call “corner lights” which are just tiny bulbs which illuminate the headlight housing.
My question is, in order to have my turn signals become parking lights, will I need a separate wiring harness? I did do a search about this before so aplogies if it has been listed however I can’t seem to find the correct wording.
When we use switchbacks on the motorbikes - they need 3 wires connecting to work.
The extra wire is to the sidelight live.
You will also need an LED flasher unit to stop indicator hyperflash when using led bulbs.
A simple solution is to install LED bulbs in the foglight housings, if you have foglights fitted.
They need to lbe switched on and off manually but thats no big deal.
You can also put led bulbs in for the sidelights.
This will give even better road presence
I will eventually put DRL’s in the foglamp housings but in the Netherlands it’s quite strict and I will absolutely fail my MOT for that. What I’m looking for is a way to accomplish what’s in the video links.
I used a kit that included indicator/DRL bulbs (LED) and all the necessary wiring, bought from ebay.
In the UK, when headlights are on, the DRLs must be turned off, so a relay is used to interrupt the signal to the DRLs, switched by the headlight-on signal. This entails using a piggyback fuse which replaces the stock fuse and is in effect a double-decker, so that you have the original feed, plus the secondary for the relay coil. Writing this without the precise details to hand, but it’s pretty straightforward and if you get the right kit all the wiring (minimal) comes with it. If you need more info, such as the fuse to be piggybacked, I can dig it out.
To start with, your kit looks exactly the same as mine, so that’s good. Next, I would throw away the controller; mine seemed to work initially but then I would find the DRLs on when the car was parked on the drive and I had to swap it for a relay (and others had reported similar problems at the time). Save yourself some time and go with a relay from the start - which also makes your question about the black wire redundant. Attached is the wiring diagram that I did at the time and it’s all still working as it should. It’s a bit fiddly getting at the bulbs and so on, but really not that difficult. Good luck!
