Going to dye my mk3 soft top. Did it once before thought I was being very careful and got paint flicks over my red trim. Is there a plastic sheet I can cover doors boot bonnet etc and what sort of tape should I use that won’t take paint off. Many thanks in advance.
I would wax the car first, that way any stray paint is on the wax rather than the car. Low tack masking tape is not going to damage your paint but dont leave any masking tape on too long as the glue does get harder to remove if you leave it for days.
You can tape anything like newspaper to catch any stray flicks but you can get decorators plastic on a roll if you want to do the job properly!
I just go slow near the edges of the roof when I do mine and try to brush inwards as much as possible. I wipe up any splashes immediately and dont do any masking.
If it is a spirit based dye, a bit of white spirit should get anything off though (including your fresh wax!).
My local asda has very thin plastic decorating dust/splash sheets.
£1 each
2 of them would cover the car.
They are thin enough to tuck in and shut the roof on them to seal.
Then tuck them over the windows and shut the doors.
I use them when re-proofing the roof with Fabsil
I’ve been reading reviews on “delicate “ Frog tape. The bad reviews say it takes off the paint when pulled. Admittedly when used on interior work. Any suggestions please
They are referring to interior paintwork which can be hit and miss if it is properly keyed to the paint or plaster below it. Car paint is properly applied so is in a different league.
You can stick the tape onto your arm first to take off a lot of the “stick” if that would make you feel happier but then the tape might not stick!
If you have waxed the car, the tape is sticking to that rather than the paint so I dont think is much/any risk but you have to be happy with what you do!
I’ve used blue 3M masking tape on several cars (paint and trim) with no issues. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Scotch-Resistant-Automotive-Masking-07898/dp/B00200E1R6/?th=1
It’s sold as automotive masking tape but I don’t know if that’s 3M’s description or the seller’s.
I tend to use it when I’m applying products that might stain rubber or black plastic trim, so I normally mask the trim not the paint. I had to mask some paint with it the other day, though. I had no issues but I didn’t leave it on for long.
Yes it’s me again I decided to dye my top yesterday. Baking hot but did it in the shade. It’s come out streaky. Is there a particular brush I should be using. I don’t understand the WET concept. Help please
