E10 New Fuel Megathread [Consolidated for all E10 discussion]

Yes, it varies from station to station in different parts of the country of course. The ESSO garage I often go to is actually cheaper than the nearest Tesco. But you often find that in many places, ESSO’s finest is 2nd mortgage money.
They ‘reckon’ the higher RON fuel also has more cleaning additives in it, so it isn’t just a case of ‘just two more RON’.
For what it’s worth, I’m a maths guy and can do the mpg each fill to the nearest 100th. My Mrs has used various supers in her MINI since she got it in March and that Sainsbury’s 97 gives the best mpg on her car.

I usually do fill to fill MPG checks too, will try the Sainburys E5 for a couple of tankfuls and see how it goes.

Ha ha, I had a double points voucher for yesterdays fill too!

My tuppenceworth, I have used supermarket fuel for years with no apparent problems and was content with it, however recently I have used the ‘special stuff’ in particular our 1985 VW camper van (which had an engine rebuild and mild tune large port heads and a Weber twin choke in 2018) seems to perform much better, crisper throttle response and tackling hills etc more competently and believe me you would know it in the van! Of course this could be imagined but I’m sure it’s not as recently I drove it after a month of no use and was pleasantly surprised by the way it was driving and it was some time before I remembered the fuel upgrade, I had been supe sceptical but I think I am now convinced, I have also noticed similar results in my MK2.5 1.6 !

I have been using V-Power now for the last few purchases, and Shell having given me a £3.00 thank you for doing so. And mpg is around 5% improved.

5% is worth having, do you think there is any chang in performance ?

On my Eunos, definitely, E5/Super on my ND not so noticeable in my opinion.

It is very much a personal feeling Baabaa, but for me, yes, I think there is a little more freedom in the way the engine responds from 3,500 revs onward.

I use Tesco Momentum in the 5, and have always put regular in our other car, a Citroen C3 1.2 litre that has no power in its 3 cylinder engine at all.
Recently started putting Momentum in the C3 as well, and there is a definite improvement, it goes up hills better and I firmly believe that if circumstances offered it the car would definitely now be able to pull the skin off a rice pudding.

My first experience of the MX-5 was when my wife was given an NC2 as her company car back in 2011. It was an automatic 2.0L with PRHT, and we both thought it was fabulous.

Because Linda had to drive it to Bristol every day for work (some 25 miles away from Frome), and knowing no different, she put regular petrol in it, and the car seemed quite happy with this.

Four years down the line, and the MX-5 had to be returned after the end of the leasing period, and neither of us liking the look of the then new ND model, we decided on a VW Scirocco as its replacement.

However, we both missed the open-top motoring that we had fallen in love with in the four years that we had the NC, so we decided to shell out and buy another 5 as a second car. - an NC of course.

We bought a 2008 2.0L Sport, again with the PRHT, and started using it with standard fuel, but it didn’t like it (perhaps being an older model than we had before might be significant - we don’t know). The performance and smoothness was transformed once we started using Shell V-Power, and being a second car, and only used for fun, we have kept on using V-Power, as the greater cost is not important because of the low mileage.

Filling up last week at our local Shell station, I noticed that they didn’t have any E10 petrol for sale - which suits me fine anyway, as our 5 loves the V-Power, and we will carry on using it until its phased out.

So confusing at our local garage, needed E5 as we have a river cruiser with an inboard Ford Crossflow of 1971 vintage. Pumps labeled E10 but asked first and was told it’s E5 until September 1st when it will then be E10. Quiered do they use another tank or drain old 95 Ron E5 before hand but they didn’t know. Playing safe and will be using super unleaded which they say is still E5 for five years.

If by that you mean you asked someone working behind the counter when you paid, I’m not surprised. In my experience you’re doing well if they know more than what a pump is.

And there isn’t any definite cut off then. That would be the minimum cut off. But it could well go on.

Oh the memories of one of those. Many years ago I had a nauticus canal cruiser with one of those. Not cheap to run though even back then, used to leave the moorings with lots of fuel like a floating bomb!! Ended up transplanting an old BMC diesel into it in the end.

Very nice, I think that is a Norman if I am not mistaken. Mine used about a gallon an hour. Doesn’t sound much but there aren’t many places to stop for petrol on the canal do you had to leave with what you thought you would use, which was quite a lot if you were away for 3 days. Diesel would get about 8 hours to the gallon & was the cheap untaxed red at the time.

Do you record the actual quantity of fuel and the miles, so you can see if the trip computer is accurate and if the E10 is affecting the computer accuracy?

I used to use Fuelly app and after two years the average recording fill ups and fuel costs etc tallied with the Avg on the ND so I stopped using the app. Seeing the total fuel cost every time I updated the app was depressing so now I fill up and enjoy the drive instead.

I get about 33mpg in my NB 1.8 Sport(Torsen diff and old fashioned US emissions tuning which is run it rich and let the catalyst sort out the tailpipe emissions), so I just stick the fuel and mileage in a spreadsheet and don’t even think about the cost per mile!
