Eunos LSD fitted to all?

Hi, I am thinking of buying another Eunos , the one I am looking at is a 1.6 G reg. My question is has it got a LSD or were they fitted on later MK 1s?.

Thanks.
Dave

LSD was an option, not standard spec

LSD standard on S-Ltd and other Ltd run eunos

And welcome Cool

Vast majority of Roadsters had a LSD fitted from new.

Have a look underneath at the diff output flanges. The VLSD has different flanges that can be recognised. Google it to bring up some pics.

Thanks folks, I just sold my S LIMITED so I knew that had a LSD, I’ll check out some Google pic’s.

Are there any other differences on basic models compared with limited editions engine, gearbox chassis ETC ?

I just found this on You tube

The base Roadster 1.6, as pointed out, did not come with a vlsd, and quite a high proportion of the early cars were base cars. The vlsd though is easy to test for, without having to get underneath and identify parts. The VLSD was includes in 1.6 S-Packages and above. Never fitted to automatics. More complicated with the 1.8, when Mazda brought out the not-quite-stripper M-Package. Plus spinning the hubs doesn’t work on the later Torsen.

I found this list, if it’s correct even the LEs had LSD as an option .So my S limited may not have had a LSD?
When was the Torsen system first fitted , was it fitted as standard to any MK1s before the MK 1.5

My S-ltd has LSD and I think all S-ltd did, they also have billys all round and extra bracing on the chassis.

My s limited was great handling wise ,Do you know if it Torsen or standard?

My S-ltd has very good handling with the extra stiffening, as the rear wheels both turn the same way when jacked up and spun I would say it is a normal LSD.

The engine in my S-ltd revs a lot and goes like s–t of a shovel.  It is faster than my neighbours 1.8 Harvard.

The S-Limited was just a S-Special with leather; which meant it had the 1.6 viscous LSD, the same bilstein suspension package (shocks, springs, tuned anti-roll bar, trackrod ends), same shock top brace. All other bracing was identical to the standard 1.6. The Oxford Roadster guide listed is inaccurate.

The UK Harvard might have a bit more power, but like other UK 1.8s, it has 4.100 gearing, and the 1.6 4.300 gearing, hence the feeling of speed. In 1995, for Japan only, Mazda went back to 4.300 gearing. The engine in the S-Limited is a standard 1.6; more power than the automatic version though, and with a different redline from the 1.6.

Torsen was only ever fitted to the 1.8, and was available in Japan and the US. VLSD was available as a £2500 option on early UK cars. Mazda doesn’t refer to it as a LSD, but just as a sports differential, due to its lock-up characteristics.

I just checked the “Dandy Cars” limited editions and if they are correct only the RS and SR had LSD as standard every other limited LSD was an option.

I also found this which seems to clear up a lot of questions by visually checking the car.

My S-Ltd has a lot more bracing than my Auto.   There is no cross bracing on the rear of my auto there is also additional bracing front to back on the S-Ltd. Having seen  under a lot of 5’s the set up on the rear of my S-Ltd is different to that off other stock 5’s  Maybe she has some after market mods fitted, The engine seams to rev more freely than a lot I have driven.

Rear subframe brace was introduced in mid-late 1991, apparently with much opposition from Mazda’s  chassis’ engineers. Its not uncommon for owners to retorfit a front subframe brace. It has probably been heavily modded in Japan, not uncommon amongst the kids there. Frankly, the best Roadsters were never sent to Europe. On 90hp 1.6 MX5s sold in Europe, Mazda stripped out the bracing. Mechanically, the 1993 S-Limited was identical to the 1993 1.6 S-Special. Engines feel variable due to wear, particularly the throttle cable, timing setting etc. Over the years, I have owned many MX5s, various vintages, and each had its own character. Some are stronger than others, but thats through accident not design by Mazda.

Listing in Japanese of the differential fitments. Dandycars is wrong.

If the rear of the car is jacked up and handbrake released the wheels will spin in the same direction with LSD and opposite directions without LSD. Is this correct with all limited diffs on roadsters?

Only works with the viscous LSD.
