- My model of MX-5 is: __ND 1.5 prime-line
- I’m based near: __Cheshire
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __External CD player
Anyone recommend an External CD player/drive for the above, something you know that works. Seen a few with just a USB connection which the car thinks is an I- Pod and the tracks appear on the screen. many thanks
I bought one of these new on Ebay for about 60 quid. It came with a 12v plug for the car, or runs off 2 AA batteries, and sounds great. There is also a 2.5mm analog output that I can plug into my ND.
You dont need the casette interface, and you can easily buy a 2.5mm cable; but you do need the cigarette lighter cable with inbuilt adapter to 4.5v.
Have a look around for a good price!

Have they got rid of the CD player? My ND (2017) has a CD player under the central cubby behind where the drink holders slot into!
Yes my slot is in the middle between the seats too, dont know what id do without it
i mean my walkman is ok but i prefer my cd player, i didnt realise i had one until recently, now i cant leave it alone …
I was shocked the car had a CD player. I didn’t know it was there until about a year after I got the car, I think I tried it once to see if it worked. I wonder if there are any new cars out there that still come with one?

Another thing to disappear, they call it modern technology or something.
I can’t remember the last time I played a CD, but I’d be curious to know whether the unit also plays DVDs.
The Alpine AVN2 unit fitted to the later MK3.75s does play DVDs (only when the car is stopped, with the handbrake applied, obviously), although I have never been able to envisage any circumstances when I would actually want to watch a DVD in the MX-5.
(My BMW E39 M5 did have a TV module built in. The only time I ever used it was when we were out somewhere and couldn’t get home in time to watch a Formula 1 Qualifying session, so we pulled over to the side of the road and watched it in the car).
Does anyone know exactly when it went AWOL?

Can CD the player just be removed ?
@macclad can you please post photos of the space between the seats in the 2023 model - to see if at least you’ve gained storage space?
The space where the CD player was is still there, but is covered by a blank. The storage unit appears to be the same. Not something i thought about when i bought the new ND., but i’m still very pleased with my new purchase. Have seen something on a site called Car audio stuff.

Not sure Malc, my 2020 ND had one. This seems standard practice on all new cars these day’s. Have lot’s of CD’s., am a certain age and don’t want the palava of transferring the music etc., but who know’s!!! The car is great though!!!
Would you post a photo, please, so I can compare with my ND?
David
Thanks for the reply, I suspect it was from when they renamed the model line up.

Is it possible to get a plug-in turntable for my ND? Preferably with an autochanger? I have a huge collection of LPs I would like to be able to play in it.

I wouldn’t know how to David but i have just had a physical check for you and the storage unit between the seats does appear to be slightly deeper inside. The depth of the missing Cd player i guess.
Na, what we need is an 8-track player or better still a quadraphonic one. I still have some quadraphonic 8-track cassettes stashed away just in case!!!
