Did a run to the tip to get rid of some garage clutter, but couldn’t resist taking a pic of the OEM bushes as a reminder of all the pulling, pushing, sawing, grinding, drilling, hacking, whacking and praying involved:
A job well worth it tho eh ?
I’m in same process and I’m pleased to say as yet I’ve not managed to detached any of the bark from my fingers or hands with the aforementioned pulling, pushing, bashing, etc etc
Glad to hear it, PPE is a must with all the sharp bits and clamping forces involved.
The car is great, it’s such a nimble little thing and so much fun.
If you haven’t already done it, I highly recommend doing the diff mounts while you are there. It does create a bit more rumble in the cabin, and you do feel it through the seat, and there is a bit of diff whine, but there’s a distinct improvement in throttle response and the speed of gear shifting.
Let’s face it, the MX5 is hardly the last word in refinement anyway
Good news on the handling , I originally planned on floflex bushes but opted for the Strongflex as I believe you did.
Yeah diff mounts…I’ve read your post and watched videos, still debating on the dropping of subframe involved and working spaces involved…incase of seized bolt agro.
Yes I used Strongflex, very happy with them.
What you could do is unbolt and remove the two rear subframe braces, then try to loosen the three subframe nuts either side just a bit. If they undo, you know that you can lower the subframe.
The bolts holding the diff mount to the subframe are fairly accessible, so once you get on them with a ratchet or breaker bar you’ll know if you shift them.
Finally, the four small nuts on top of the diff mount that fasten to the diff are very well protected and looked new when I removed them, though they are admittedly hard to get at.
That brings back memories!
