Gear Knob refurbishment

I’d like to polish up the alloy ring on the gearknob on my NC. Its quite scratched. I know how the knob comes off but can anyone tell me if it can be dismantled? Also is the alloy ring metal or plastic?

After removing the knob, would it not come off with a little heat i.e hairdryer and gentle persuasion?
I would think its alloy, if not rub down and good old VHT Satin Silver…or replace it

Make it Matt with a bit of wet and dry…

Thanks Robbie. Looks like it should come apart then with a bit of care. I really don’t want to risk any damage by doing it assembled.
