Gearbox swap - Master and Slave Cylinders

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK1 Eunos
  2. I’m based near: Stamford
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Slave and Master Cylinder connection.

Hi everyone,

I’m in the midst of my Rocketeer conversion; there’s a thread here if anyone is interested.

When finding a suitable donor car, I decided on an automatic as I figured they might be a bit cheaper, they were less likely to have been hammered in to the ground and the chances were they may have been owned by a more discerning owner in the past. A lot of assumptions there!

Now, not being a mechanic in the slightest, doing a Rocketeer conversion and converting from automatic to manual is at best suicidal.

Things I have done:

  • Purchased a 5 speed gearbox from a mk2

  • Fitted the manual pedal box

  • Purchased gearstick, mountings and surround.

  • Purchased Master Cylinder
  • Purchased Slave Cylinder
  • Purchased Master to Slave hose.

Now, I know where the Master and the slave mount; the troubles i’m having are:

  • Finding the correct hard line to go from the gearbox/slave cylinder.
  • Finding any diagrams of how the clutch pedal connects to the master cylinder
  • Finding a diagram of how the gearstick connects to the gearbox/slave

Does anyone have any experience of doing any of the above? Any help would be much appreciated!

Kind Regards.

Andrew

Your local garage will be able to make up the hard lines. They’re just brake lines so they’ve all had to change them with our salty roads. You will need a flexible section between the body and the engine though.

You could consider going braided. There’s no reason that you have to have hard lines, braided ptfe lines will work just as well and you can be a bit more creative with your routing should the need arise. And of course they look trick [that’s a biking term for cool or racy  ]
