Going Racing. A Novices first year.

I’m sitting here knowing that in 12 days time I will be taking part in my first “real” Race.I will be entering the MAX5 championship and maybe 2 of the BARC open car events.

I started track days about 2 ½ years ago with a sprint at the Haynes Museum test track…Id got no idea what I was doing but the car looked the part.

I tried my hand at several ciruits and tried to listen to the good advice that many drivers gave me… NickD + Al Clarke amongst them.I did a few Ring trips with them and enjoyed the time out there without ever feeling that I had gone anywhere near my limits.

Half way through 2010 I was starting to think about going racing. But life always seems to have excuse to steal your time and your Funds…
The descision after much disscussion with the Wife was to give it a try
“What was there to lose? ”.

This had come on the Back of us loosing a family member at the age of  54 and a Close neighbour being diagnosed with Motor Neurons at 44,
Life was like a box of Chocolates…but they were all S****** coffee ones.
So at the Young age of 42 and few Currys over a normal BMI I took the plunge.

THE ARDS TEST

Well a MSA GO Racing pack was ordered and read through several times
The monotonous DVD was watched and a medical was booked.
The Doctor Fitted me in at lunch time…If only I could earn £90 for half an hours work…Passed fit.

The ARDS test was booked for Cadwell and Having passed the written part. Out with the Instructor Examiner. He was a Man mountain of a man and My little mx5 never looked so full.
I was on New and untested tyres and I’d had the Geometry reset so how was the car going to be?
“ 3 warm up laps then 2 fast laps at pace which you will be marked on”

It was a damp track so I took it carefully …1 car had spun at park in front of me, and I didn’t want to copy him. Well I passed with a few words od advice from the examiner.
The form was posted back off and a New MSA National B licence was returned.

THE EBAY FRENZY FOR GEAR

So you look at the list of stuff you Need. I think MSA means “More Squids Added”.
A new helmet, race suit balaclava (still in Bag) and the myriad clothing you need. I think the postman was bored of coming to the house.

This all stopped for a few weeks whilst I tried the clothing out at a few track days. I felt a right tit at some of them but I needed to get used to wearing them.

Then The frenzy started again As I tried to put a small toolbox together
Trolley , new socket set, tie down straps a few spare parts for the new car
It’s the little stuff that you need to think off the most.

THE BIG BOYZ TOYZ

The point of no return came when I went to view a fully preped MK3 race at Paul Roddisons Garage. The car was  built an run in last years championship, the car finishing 2nd in more experienced hands than mine.

A deposit was placed and now the long search for a trailer was unleashed.
Id convinced (Asked Nicely) the wife that A nice 4x4 would be well suited to her as we get very bad winters up here.and so one was found and she liked it, The fact that it had a tow bar was just Coincidence.

I found a company who made stock cars up in Morecombe and they also produced trailers to your spec at a very good price similar to a 2nd hand Brian James.
So Bingley Engineering built my trailer to my needs and I was off to collect it. I had never driven with a trailer so that was fun until I came to reverse…Lets not go into that.

I was Ready to collect the car and did so in time to attend the Bedford Track day .On arrival I had to ask NickD how to open the fuel release as I had no idea. I Had so far only driven On and off the trailer, and I had a good day getting used to a new and unfamiliar car. She went well.

Next time Im in her will be during qualifying on the new Snetterton circuit.

THE LAST FEW DETAILS

I joined BARCas they oversee the Championship and you need to be a member of a racing club.
I have sent my entry forms off to BARC and Are waiting for confirmation (do they confirm receipt ?).I have ordered some race Numbers and hope to run under the number 42.
Which according to D Addams Is the answer “To life , the Universe and everything”…Lets Hope so.

This will be a long term Bloggy type thing and I would like to thank

And Helen. SWMBO .Who I can only repay with having her project on my car www.heroespastandpresent.org.uk/
Oh and a trip to Canada…sorry Mrs tried to get out of that one…

Great stuff Alan.  I too was on track at Haynes and remember the day, and your car very well.  I’m sure the whole OC forum wish you well with the racing and look forward to following your progress…  And number 42, I hope you get it, as it does indeed seem most apt… Big Smile

Wishing you all the luck for the coming season, if you need trailer reversing lessons give me a shout Wink

Email just came through Payment acdcepted, im in for snetterton.

Oh and some roll bar padding just arrived.

Alan

Assuming the car is still race-ready then scrutineering should be a breeze, but don’t forget your novice cross on the back and don’t, whatever you do, don’t miss the driver’s briefing and do make sure they know it is your first race.

It’s not so they will be particularly looking to catch you out, but it just helps everyone understand should something a little unsual occur. I speak as a one-time race clerk of the course and can assure you that they will have your best interests at heart.

If there is anything at all about the format at the meeting that you are unsure of then do ask an official (don’t always rely on Joe Somebody saying “its always done like that”), particularly because the revamped Snetterton is likely to throw up some different procedures and incidents for the organisers as well as the competitors.

Finally… enjoy!!

Thats great mate ,will be there to cheer you on .Just been in touch with nick asking about cadwell track day, might put my foot on 1st rung of ladder cheers ,Jim.

Well today I have done few final Jobs.

Gave the car a final at home check and stuck her back on the perch and straped her down.

added the race Number (42) to the front and sides

Fixed the huge camera mount to the roll cage, just a secondary strap to pass muster
added a small taste of where it all started too…and a OC sticker as well

And a close up of the superclamp and fully ajustable head

4 days …

Alan

Ok so it Monday Morning and The Hi Def Video failed to upload in 649 minutes I might have some footage

FRIDAY

Pulling the trailer with the car on it and then turning it on a drive way that slopes towards your garage was hard work

Will take the car off in future and re load one the trailer is hitched.

The Journey down was ok if long and boring arriving @ the hotel about 17.00

Washed, fed and watered I settled down for a Premier inn “gauranteed good nights sleep”…I should have asked for my money back!

SATURDAY 17th

had a good breakfast and set for the circuit at just gone 9.
It was jam packed and I had to ditch the trailer away from the main group and jst drive the car over.
Everyone made themselves known and made me feel very welcome.

Some simple check were done to the car and we all slowly got ready for Qualifying…
The descision to get into the race suit was a togh one as I had been steadily gassing myself everytime I moved / bent down…I was not pleasent to be around.

We are called to the assembly area and set off for our qualifying laps
In the first corner Rodders flew past me as he wanted to be behind the only driver who had driven the circuit.
I got into a bit of a tustle with car 71 which probally slowed us both down a little on the new layout
I qualified in 7th place with a lap of 2:34:988  the best lap was set by Rodders with a 2:22:577 which is within 0:1 of his best in both races…

I came in and prepared for the next 4 hours till race time.
the BBQ was fired up and all the drivers sat chatting and taking advice about car set up whilst staying to stay cool in the warm and muggy sunshine
Was we certain this was April in the uk.It was very relaxed whilst staying competitive.

Time for race 1.
Down to the assembly area and park up in your grid position.
Some of the drivers got out and walked about and others like myself sat in the cars getting their game face on.

Actually I have to sit calmly or my glasses steam up and they are dificult to get right pushing them through the slot and behind your balaclava.

Engines started and out onto the grid…rtemeber this is a green flag lap (warm up)…half me is thinking I hope so

the 2 minute board is shown to the grid. The 1 minute board followed by the 30 seconds and 5 seconds the green flag is droped
and for the first time I have a gaggle of cars all around me.
Some are weaving to add warmth to the tyres and testing grip levels of the new ashphalt.

Back to the grid and line up.

The Red lights go on…Engines revs…The lights go out

Drop the clutch and feed in the gas… the noise around is something Ive never experienced.
Split seconds and I notice Ive got a better start than than car 17. Mirror checked I pull tight to the wall and go past fast approaching
the fast right hand riches. I decide to hold the inside line and keep the place Id gained.
as I turned into riches I saw car 71 caome around the out side of me and gett the line for the hairpin montreal
1 up 1 down in the first 20 seconds.

Several laps of taking then loosing the place with car 71 (Tony Johnson) with car 17 slowly gaining on us
Id lost the place twice turning into Brundle and having ou paced tony once again I forgot trackday etiquiet and got into race mode and held the line
so he couldnt get passsed on the inside.I was quicker around Coram and by the time I was at the end of the start straight I pulled a lead out and could see the
battle behind me now between Tony and John.

The circuit is hard enough to catch you out with some very chalenging corners!
I tried to keep the pace increasing but had no chance of catching 5th …I couldn’t even see him
and thats how the race finished a huge 40 second gap between Clive Bussey in 5th and myself in 6th
John + Tony  finished 12.5 seconds behind me less than a second apart.

On getting back to the scruitenering bay the car weighed in at 1150 k
and that when PGD took the grinning like a loon photo.

A good first race. I gained a place, and shaved 3 second of my best lap…and not touched the dirt.

Cars were parked and the wife and I set off for another relaxed night.

SUNDAY 18th

The Morning was hot and looked to get hotter.
Everyone was in fine form and looking forward to getting the race on at 11.00
This was delayed due to an incident in a earlier race
I was on line 3 of the grid alongside Clive Bussey (stigatronix)
Im not going to give a blow by blow account as Ive got this one on video, which will be posted soon.
All im going to say is the first 4 laps place traded places a lot I even ran out of tarmac on the exit of murrays!!

Having lost it

Yay I got it back after a few laps…Steady now …dont lose it again

The circuit had a few more drivers off roading

At the chequered flag I was in 6th place again
36 second behind Clive in 5th again (so that was better) and 1 second knocked off my best lap time

I looked a little hotter at the end of this one! but It was a fantastic feeling as I cooled down and reflected
on the weekend. Is it a step up from trackdays…Oh yes and then some.I took a bit of time to get into race mode but im sure it will
get easier.

Well done to Paul ,Jon and Jeremy

Rodders putting awning away whilst holding an ice cream…to the victor the spoils and all that!

I am going to say that if you have ever thought about it…Go and do it! Dont put it off.
Dont worry about being good enough…my down changes are as rough as a hell…
I still had a fantastic time and I am looking forward to Silverstone on the 7th -8th May.

And finally thanks to the wife for grabbing this sexy shot of me sporting my Nutz t shirt and My lucky race pants!

Taking fun seriously!..It looks like it

Alan

First race weekend and two 6th place finishes…thats cracking mate well done.

Loving the underwear Wink
