Hard top for the winter for my MX5 MK3 2007

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC
  2. I’m based near: __Birmingham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Hard Top

Does anybody know where I can purchase a hardtop for my NC FOR WINTER USE BUT KEEP THE SOFT TOP FOR SUMMER IF WE HAVE ONE Thanks

Ebay , depends on how much your willing to pay

You will also need the fitting kit of your planning to drive it with it on (if you can find one)

Good luck! They do come up but it seems to depend on where you are in the country. I’m in Devon and it took me just over a year to find one close to me. I looked on eBay, Facebook and Gumtree. I eventually found one on Gumtree but paid too much for it.

There are two on Gumtree at the moment, one in Bradford for £1500 and one in Essex for £1,000.
Don’t forget about the cost of a respray if it doesn’t match you car.

I’m glad I’ve got one even if it did cost too much.
Mike

This one in Solihull is closer to you, I’d ask if the seller has got the fitting kit. When I bought mine it wasn’t included as it was still on the sellers car so I offered to swap the bits off my car in exchange for the kit.

Thanks for all your help and I have contacted the seller if it includes the fitting kit as well so I will keep you all posted. Solihull is only 15min away from where I live so near to collect !!!

I have had this reply from the seller he says only the 2 rear bolts are required (don’t think this is correct) am I correct to say that the plates are required to hold down the centre section of the hood ? Paul

I wouldn’t fit it with just the rear bolts as it will move slightly, could rub the paint and creak as you are driving. You will need all the bits in Harcos photo above. There are 2 used sets on eBay at the moment but they don’t include the wire for the heated rear screen.

Another cheaper option is a Jazz fitting kit but you’d also need the wire and the frankenstein bolts for the rear and its not such a quick fit. Plus if you want it to look better you will need the two trim pieces.

Cable is £23

I am going to see a hard top next week said to be barley used has any forum members got a clue to the cost of these hoods are fetching it seem like £1000,00 would the forum agree ? Thanx Paul

Hi forum members just a quick note regarding the purchase of the hardtop. I went to see it yesterday and purchased it. The hood is in immaculate condition and came complete with the fixing kit and storage trolley. The only thing missing is the rear window extension lead which I have just purchased for £30.00 from MX5PARTS. I think I got a bargain at £867.00 complete. I am going to fit it over the weekend to see what is looks like and if I am going to leave it silver or get ir painted Copper Red. Thanks again for all your help Paul

Well done Paul, I’m glad I got one. Mine came with a storage bag but a stand would have been useful. I guess that’s something else to search for! :joy:
I’m getting mine resprayed next Tuesday.

Here’s my winter hard top.:grin::grin::grin::grin:

I like your comment. I have one like that as well but full of stuff !!! Paul

Thanks Mike the hood is silver so I have a look when i have got it one, but I think I will get it sprayed like you which is Copper Red. Hope you don’t mind me asking what sort of price for the re-spray ? Paul

Don’t know exactly what the cost of the roof is because I’m having the back bumper and one sill done at the same time. The total for all 3 is £800 which I did think was a bit high as the same sprayer did my front bumper, sprayed and fitted a new front wing (which I supplied) and part of the rear bumper and wing for £500 three years ago. I’m using him because he’s 3 doors down from where I work and I can drop it off and pinch a van from work to get home and he is very good. When he did the work last time the colour match was perfect.

I am getting the complete front bumper and the rear drivers panel and front wind bone £400.00

That seems a better price than mine. Are you getting the roof sprayed?

Hi Forum fitted the fixing kit no problem and hood fits OK BUT !!! DAFT QUESTION WHERE IS THE SWITCH FOR THE HEATED REAR WINDOW LOCATED ON THE DASHBOARD AND HOW DO YOU GET TO PLUG IN THE EXTENSION CABLE!!! Help would be very much appreciated Paul

Thanks to another forum member switch found but does anybody know how to install the extension cable from the existing ragtop cable to the hardtop ?

After many years in the IT Industry I have spent many hours on forums trying to find out many IT Issues and thought they were brilliant. Now retired I have not had to search the internet forums for lost instructions ect and asking for specialised help. Purchasing 4 weeks ago a 2007 MX5 MK3 I was fold by a very close friend although he is the owner of a Reliant Scimitar (and a member of the Scimitar Owners Club) he said the first thing you need to do is to join the MX5 Owners Club for technical help that you defiantly at some time need to use.

With help from members PaleRider, Harco and Westo (told me what was required) I was able to obtain the Hood, Fitting Kit, Extension Cable. All I was missing was a instruction sheet of how to fit it and by a GOOGLE Search I even found that on all places the MX5 Website NC Detachable Hardtop Fitting Instructions.pdf - MX-5 Owners Club (mx5oc.co.uk)

Thanks to all for your help

Paul
