Just added half a bottle (required dose) of Redex Petrol Injector. Car suddenly misfires under acceleration; no real power delivery. Machine gun noise from rear. OMG etc!
What the hell have I done? Have used Redex loads but not the injector cleaner.
Car sounds like a V8… I have a sports cat, MX5 Parts cat-back zorst, induction kit and everything’s been serviced and oil changed.
From your description it sounds like you’re running on 3 (or fewer) cylinders…?
Perversely, it’s possible that the redex has dislodged some gunge that has gone down into the injector nozzle, blocking it off. Further vigorous driving might well dislodge it again for the better…
Have you overdosed the patient nurse? If the car was OK before this, and if the petrol tank is not full, fill it to dilute the mix and then give it a good thrashing.
Well, the consensus is that the most likely cause is the thing you did just before the problem started…in which case, the cheapest solution might be a good thrash to try to clear any blockages.
However… It could just be a coincidence in which case all bets are off.
You say that you added half a bottle but since Redex comes in different size bottles I am guessing that you have a 250ml bottle.

If you did use a 250ml bottle, then half should have been added to a full tank but I don’t think you did so because later in the thread you mentioned adding fuel to dilute.
<o:p></o:p>
Since your problem occurred since adding Redex, I would suggest that the mix is too strong and that you still need to add fuel (full tank).
<o:p></o:p>
Is there any smoke from the exhaust since you added the Redex?
There are other possibilities but start with the fuel to Redex ratio.
<o:p></o:p>
The noise from the rear is a little concerning, What you describe is the noise of one of the cylinders firing coming through the exhaust. So has a bit of crap shifted and is now sticking an exhaust valve open? Victormeldrew is thinking along this line and Geoff Peace is saying the same as I about the strength of the mix. So all three of us are on the same line of thought.
<o:p></o:p>
It seems likely that the redex mix is your problem but co-incidences do happen.

Just checked on Amazon where it says that half of a 250ml bottle treats 50ltrs.
I seem to have nurdled with my mix ration: what a greenhorn!
I have decided to fill her up en route to work in the morning then go for it. If a valve is blocked and I can’t blast it open with my unique driving style - what kind of work/cost would put this right?
Just for a little bit of peace of mind, I’ve used the Redex original and the Redex petrol injector (both as fuel additives) at least 8 times over the last couple of years in my MX5 without any problem at all.
I would check all the leads / plugs (ideally by replacement) before giving it the spirited drive or ‘thrashing’ as is so eloquently put or you may inadvertedly do other damage, but subject to this being undertaken (and any other advice given here), I think I would also be minded to see if opening up the throttle a little assists in dissipating the blockage!
I doubt you have done any real damage…if you’ve been heavy handed with the dose, it’s just misfiring as a result and it’ll clear up in a few minutes after diluting it down.
