Hello
Not sure how to use this area but will introduce myself ?
I have a MX5 Sport (2006) which I love
It has only done 16000 miles . I think it’s getting to the age when it needs more TLC so will be interested in reading relevant articles ?
Hi there! I am sure you will find plenty of information about your 5 in here!
Sounds like you have been caring for so far, feel free to post a pic or two for our enjoyment
What a lovely MX5!
Welcome aboard.
We can see your piccies.
Your car looks great. Quite an attractive colour and trim combination.
There are many knowledgeable folk on here so someone will know the answers to your questions.
Here’s to many top down miles.
Cheers
Thank you ! Had it from new and polish it regularly. Had issues with water on passengers floor and learned how to unblock using piece of wire for cleaning instruments .
Always passed its MOT until recently when needed a part underneath welded ( which worried me a bit )
It’s zooming along v nicely and sounds great but although it’s v low mileage worry a bit about what might go wrong next . I actually have a silver picnic box thingy with leather straps which hasn’t been on for 10 years !!
Onwards and upwards
Don’t forget scuttle grommets causing water in passenger footwell.
Welcome to the club - great car, looking good.
What the heck is that ??
You don’t need to buy new ones just clean up the old ones and get loads of sealant around and under the plastic fitting.
- will be researching that one .
Welcome NorwichLass to Owners Club. Norfolk Fives is your very local area group. No doubt you’ve checked out this on the Forum. We meet on the third Wednesday evening of the month at Bird in Hand, Wreningham just south of Norwich. Maybe you were there last week, there were several new members. Come along 7pm’ish we don’t bite, we can explain the world of grommets to you and find out what’s happening in Norfolk.
No didn’t know that !
Sounds very useful. Won’t be able to make it for a bit due to death in family but will put in in diary . Thought grommets went in your ears !
Not now you have a MK3 !
Vital you do, as the water gets into the passenger footwell via the fusebox - not good.
Fairly easy job and no need to replace the plastic inserts, known as grommets, as its only the gaskets that go and its best to replace them with sealant.
Temporarily l. You can put a piece of tape over the tiny dranage hole that drains the well in the oassenger side of the plastic scuttle cover ( the bit with windscreen wipers in it )
Thats where the water comes from.
Thank you ! That sounds good - need to investigate
the NC has 2 little caps, one on each side of the plastic “scuttle” at the base of the windscreen. On removing these ( difficult not to break) one can see a screw, which is driven into a plastic “grommet”…The grommet has a foam seal/washer to seal it into the hole in the bodywork. Over time the foam washer disintegrates and this can lead to a leak directly into the passenger or drivers footwells and sometimes affects the fuse box which is just to the side at the passengers left foot, in front of the door and below the glovebox. (RHD Car). I have no obvious leak… all carpets dry… but noticed a little surface rust on one of the metal brackets just above the fuse box… and thus just below the aforementioned “grommet”. So I ordered 2 new grommets from MX5 parts… couple of quid each… and a couple of the wee cover caps- cos I knew I would break at least one on removal and decided to replace my grommets- so to speak. The photos may be self explanatory. I’m assuming the PRHT is the same as the soft top- otherwise this won’t be of interest?!
I removed old grommets ( both sides) and replaced with new, and sealed in with silicon mastic… that should be a more permanent job, although to be fair my car was 11 years old at the time.
Brilliant ! Thank you so much ! Learning a lot
