Help Please! Diagnosing flashing ABS and airbag lights

Hello all, my 99 10th anniversary has an issue with the abs and airbag light flashing simultaneously. To me whilst driving there is no pattern but filmed it tonight while stationary and it seems to do a quick flash, then nothing then a longer flash.

I have attached the YouTube link, I have heard you can tell by the flashes what’s wrong? Can anyone please point me in the right direction.

? I’m hoping it’s nothing serious :-/

Many thanks in advance!

That should help you

Strange - I thought that the lights came on solid when there was a problem and the diagnostic port had to be jumpered to get the error codes out?

Anyway - looks like an 11 so…

11 - Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Open circuit or Short to power supply

This is the normal sort of problem - ABS sensor on front wheel gone - usually the left but in your case its the right.

Air bag light is constantly monitoring and will flash while a fault is detected. OP needs to confirm which light he is referring to.

The ABS light hasn’t been wired to the air bag light to hide a previous fault has it?

This is a strange one!

I cannot find a fault code ‘11’ for the SRS airbag system. If that does exist it would make sense.

The airbag error system does constantly monitor as Robbie says so will flash a code on the dash.

The ABS normally shows a steady light when there is a fault. The diagnostic box under the bonnet has to be jumpered to flash the code(s).

It seems that your airbag constant monitoring system is putting out an ABS error code.

As Robbie suggests the implication of this is a quick fix to get through an MOT where there was an airbag fault so to hide this the airbag light connected to the ABS system. As no problem at the time with ABS when ignition turned on both airbag and ABS lights would illuminate and go out = MOT pass.

Does not explain how the airbag constant monitoring system appears to be picking up an ABS fault code.

11 is driver’s side pre-tensioner isn’t it?

That would make perfect sense if it was, so ABS light connected to airbag light circuit to hide ABS issue and then both lights flashing with airbag fault code.

Indicates that this code not relevant until later facelift cars.

We do not seem to have fault code lists in the FAQs? I only looked quickly so possibly missed them but a comprehensive list of error codes for all models would be another useful addition.

There is a list in the Downloads section of this very website in the Technical Information folder.

Worth checking battery voltage with engine running as both ABS and Airbag systems on most cars can be susceptible to poorly regulated Alternator output

Thank you all for your suggestions! I really need to get the car on diagnostic and see what it thinks is wrong! I have looked under the drivers side fuse box and some one has spliced two wires together so i think you could be right that someone has done some mods to hide a fault :frowning: I don’t wanna start messing around with it in case i make it worse so don’t know what to do now!

There are some very knowledgeable people on this site and people who know people that don’t visit this site.
If you post your location you never know you may just be living next door to someone who can help you.

Very good point! Didn’t even notice that my location isn’t visible! I am based in Huddersfield :)

Try Carl, what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing.

Hello all, so I have bought MX5 Techs v2 diagnostic tester (impressive looking piece of kit!) - hooked it up to the car (which is still constantly flashing the abs and airbag light still) - ran diagnostic. No codes found! Tried again. Same. What the hell? I have two lights flashing constantly yet no codes lol!

i am at a loss…

A few pointers about the tool.

Have you set the menu to the Mk2

It makes no mention in the instructions of a menu choice for ABS or Air bag faults.

I have not looked up the test procedure but I think you may have to short out different pins to do the air bag and ABS and if so, I’m not sure on this but the tool may or may not read these codes.

I talked to the guy who designed the tool at the Spring Rally and he is very helpful.

Contact him and he can advise if the tool does ABS and air bag codes.

Can you look at the fuse box again and advise the colours of the two wires that are spliced together and if possible you can see what fuse they connected to.

Right. Wires under the dash look to be from an old alarm and were just tucked up behind fuse box. so we took the clocks out. Wire was bridging the abs and airbag lights. god knows why. Removed and refit clocks and now air bag light flashes and abs light on solid. Tried diagnostic tester. No faults found. Here is a video of the new flashing. These mk2 codes make my head spin! Can someone please watch this code and tell me what it is?

I think you are getting there with this Tim.

The SRS has a permanent fault that was worked around by linking the SRS dash light to the ABS. I would expect this to be something like a control module failure - cheap enough to buy but dash out to replace.

Linking the SRS back to the dash light has put that light on permanently. No flashing as car does not self diagnose individual faults.

The real code flashing is a new, legitimate ABS error - I can see one long and one short repeating, so an ‘11’

11 - Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Open circuit or Short to power supply

This is common although more usually the nearside sensor(12).

Get that speed sensor sorted and the ABS fault will go. You are then left with the SRS fault, whatever that is.

Just seems very odd that the airbag light is flashing a wheel speed sensor fault :-/ these cars are very confusing! Lmao!
