Help with Bluetooth on BOSE Mk3.5

Hi,

Merry Xmas to you all! And for me its an extra special one as I have finally come back to the MX5 community with my Mk3.5 Sport Black.

Got lots of stuff planned but an important one for me is to pair the bluetooth with the factory BOSE unit.

From the Internet and the user manual, you press the voice button on the steering wheel and just listen to the choices and work through.

But on mine, when you press the button it says CODE incorrect and requests you to input a code by voice.

I tried 0000 and it didn’t work. Also, looked through the whole book pack (luckily the car came with loads of paperwork history) but there is no code written anywhere.

Does anyone know how to sort this out?  Other than that voice button, everything else works fine, CD, radio, steering wheel controls.

Any help much appreicated.

THX

That does sound odd - the Bluetooth on my Mk3.5 Sportech (BOSE Unit) works exactly as per the manual with regard to pairing; the only issue with mine is that the car very occasionally doesn’t pick up the 'phone  & the only solution is to pair it again.

Just a thought - & forgive me for asking if you’ve already done this - but is your 'phone turned on & Bluetooth on the 'phone activated when you press the button on the steering wheel?

Sounds to me like the car’s expecting a code from the 'phone?

Otherwise perhaps your dealer may be able to help?  Also there’s a small chance that it may unfortunately be a faulty Bluetooth unit (not unknown apparently on the Mk3.5). Aside from the Bluetooth issue, hope that you’re enjoying the car - bought mine new almost 6 years ago now & I still love driving it!

Please do let us all know how you get on.

Andy,

Thanks for your prompt reply!  I drove it down from Leeds which was 4hrs… Cant say I enjoyed being stuck on the motorway in an MX5 for 4hrs… luckily it has cruise, so could move my legs around a bit but my bum is still complaining!

As to the bluetooth. Phone is on and all okay that side. Problem is the BOSE cant expect to see my phone as it has yet to be paired. Like I said, I press the button, short or long and it just says Code incorrect.

ninjin, what year of make is your3.5?

would be interested to know if and when you get to the bottom of this - as I had/have the same issue. Couldn’t be bothered to spend a lot of time on what is a bit of a trivial thing, so I just bought a cheap blue tooth receiver which goes into the 12V socket and the Aux socket next to it - works fine, music crystal from my iphone. Sorry, Haven’t tried using the phone as a phone through it though

It’s a Jan 2012 registration car but the majority of sport blacks are 2011.

There is a diagnostic procedure for the hands free telephone unit in the USA 2011 manual (I don’t have the UK/European manual). It can’t hurt to try this.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC or ON position.
    2. Turn the audio unit power to OFF.
    3. While pressing the POWER/VOLUME switch, simultaneously press the PRESET switch 1 and the PRESET switch 6 for 3 s or more.

{Device code and error code is displayed}

NOTE:

If several DTCs are in the memory, they can be displayed using the SEEK/TRACK switch (up or down).

 4. To stop the on-board diagnostic test mode, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

There is a table of error codes and possible causes, pasted below as a list:

26: Er81

HF/TEL function does not operate.

CAN system

(See FOREWORD [MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM].)

26: Er82

Sound from microphone not heard

Short to power supply in wiring harness between microphone (Input signal) and HF/TEL unit

(See FOREWORD [HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE (HF/TEL) SYSTEM].)

26: Er83

Sound from microphone not heard

Short to GND/power supply in microphone power supply circuit

(See FOREWORD [HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE (HF/TEL) SYSTEM].)

26: Er84

Call transmission and receiving is impossible

Any of the following is detected:

The microphone power supply circuit is not connected.

Open circuit in the microphone input circuit

Microphone input circuit short to body ground

(See FOREWORD [HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE (HF/TEL) SYSTEM].)

26: Er85

Call transmission and receiving is impossible

Poor contact in the voice recognition/hands-free switch or HF/TEL unit connector

Voice recognition/hands-free switch malfunction

(See FOREWORD [HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE (HF/TEL) SYSTEM].)

26: Er86

HF/TEL function does not operate.

HF/TEL unit malfunction

Replace the HF/TEL unit.

(See HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE (HF/TEL) UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

To clear the codes:

2. While pressing the AUTO-M switch, simultaneously press the RPT/PRESET switch 4 for 2 s or more.

Tried out your USA 2011 key sequence but my BOSE does not go into fault code display…

:frowning:

My mistake!

Just tried again, hold down power, then press 1 & 6. And it does indeed go into diagnostic mode.

However, no errors were found.

Back to square one.

Bit of a long shot but I wonder if disconnecting the battery, waiting for 5 minutes or so & then re-connecting might re-set the unit?

You’d need to re-set the ESP (easy - the manual tells you how) & possibly the one-touch lowering for the windows, also the idling may be a bit erratic for the first few miles as the ECU re-learns the engine - but this might possibly be worth a try?

What phone are you trying to pair? Bluetooth has come a long way since the version installed in your car’s head unit and may be incompatible; just a thought.

It’s not the phone. The Bose headunit is requesting a verbal code before it will let you modify the Bluetooth settings.

Once I get the v5 back and see the address of the previous owner, I will write a letter to them and ask if they know the code.

My 2010 also has the Bose audio and Bluetooth but no code, so Mazda must have enabled radio code security on the 2011 model.  What a pain!

Do you have the car handbook - is there any mention of entering the code in there?

I think in your position, if you can’t find out the code, I would ask a Mazda agent for advice.

Mine’s an early 2012 car (I guess manufactured in 2011?) but the BOSE isn’t coded as far as I’m aware - there’s certainly no mention of the stereo being coded in the manual & I wasn’t given a code by the dealer when I picked up the car, which was then new.

I have found this:-

https://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123800744-Hands-free-is-locked-need-help-unlocking

Similar to cliveju’s advice however there do appear to be a couple of variations on that webpage e.g. whether the key is set to “Acc” or “Ignition” & whether or not the engine’s running with the key in the “Ignition” position when the re-set procedure’s followed via the stereo buttons.

Not an MX-5 I know but it’s still a Mazda with what appears to be the same Bluetooth issue?

Andy1964,

thanks for the great links… Unfortunately, tried every combination they said worked and none have…

Anyway, to all the 5’ers, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Just an update to this. Still no solution. Managed to contact Mazda UK Tech via Facebook and they said there is no solution but take it to a dealer who can reset it.

I will go today and see what the dealer says and what they charge.

Great news!!!

All sorted!

To reset the Bose in the MX5 (mine is the 6 disc version as factory fit in the mk3.5) it’s Auto-M and 2, pressed together.

Within a few seconds, cleared will appear.

Happy days!

Brilliant glad its sorted

and thanks for following up with your solution it makes for a more informative place
