Hood cleaning for beginners

I picked my MX5 Kuro last week. Whilst the paintwork is in pretty good condition, the hood isn’t too bad but has some marks on it which I would like to tackle. The joys of cleaning a hood are completely new to me! I don’t have access to a vet vac so what products or techniques are best for hood cleaning? Many thanks.

Great guide here.

If you don’t have a wet vac, don’t worry but the hood must be completely dry before you start to die it.
So just do it on a really sunny day.

The wet vac is useful not just for removing moisture, but also for extracting dirt from the hood fabric as part of the process.

So if you don’t have one, you may need to agitate and rinse a few more times, until the rinse water is obviously clear coming off the roof :+1:

Remember to release the tension on the hood and fold it a few inches so you can reach the hidden areas.

A firm toothbrush in and around the base of the hood, which usually hides an algae build up is ok. Use a soft shampoo, baby shampoo will do or for more stubborn stuff a mild dilute of Milton fluid to kill the algae.
To keep it clean a once over with shampoo now and again but really an hose down and wipe over with a clean microfiber cloth should do it.

Be careful not to overdo it if you’re rinsing off the roof using a hose in case you overflow the drainage channels going down through the car and end up with wet rear carpets.
(Don’t ask me how I know this, and yes, the tubes had recently been trombone-brushed😃)

There are a number of products around for ‘renovating’ tops… I just finished using renovo cleaner, restorer and waterproofer on mine and can’t fault it. I know people complain but use the products as instructed, not in direct sun, let dry thoroughly between things… And got super results!!

2007 NC so pretty good for a 17 year old top huh!
