How do our cars/motorbikes define us as petrol heads?

I’m in my mid 30’s so I appreciate my vehicle list may be a lot less than others but it’s amazing the trends you see in the types of cars you went for being practicality or for just fun!
All these cars served me well. Have a go on memory lane if you have a spare day for some of you! Haha

My journey started aged 16 in the year 2000 when obviously it’s cool to have a brand new scooter on your 16th birthday. This led to an F reg fiesta that even back in 2002 cost me £1,500 to insure. At 21 who wouldn’t want a mk1 mx5 that sadly got rear ended 2 months in! So I was a traitor and went to MG briefly. After that a couple of in between cars to get by! A few cars had to be practical because it’s hard squeezing 3 little ladies in an mx5. Recently I may have had a couple of fun mx5 purchases but hey if it makes you smile then it’s worth it!
Happy rainy Sunday!

I loath the term petrolhead, sorry . It connotes the type of knuckle dragging idiot who takes Clarkson seriously . I love cars and motor sport , have done all my life ,but tend to avoid any labels. I have never driven and/or owned anything that I haven’t enjoyed , even if the enjoyment derived from how appalling the car was . Equally , I think it’s misleading to label people by what they drive - am I a sad old gammon in my Yeti, a loser in my OH’s Yaris(tragically, not a GR ) but a car guy in my ND MX5 ? And presumably , an unhinged , frustrated racing driver in my old Caterham ?

Ignoring my own mantra, however , there must be serious question marks about anybody who thinks a Bentayga, Urus , Cullinan or Q7 is the answer to any question a sane person might ask …

Wow serious Sunday…someone who loves cars!

It’s basic human nature to compartmentalize and label, whether it be people, music, films or whatever. It probably helps us understand things, and I suppose makes choosing easier.

Imagine going into a record store and having to sift through hundreds of titles, even if you knew what artist you wanted and went straight to the correct alphabetical section - you’d soon get fed up and leave. Having different musical styles separated, and placed in specific sections of the store, make things easier. Go straight to the blues section (if that’s your bag), and not bother with country or easy listening.

It’s the same with people. Labelling or compartmentalizing people, into common interests, makes choosing friends easier for instance. After all, what’s the point of being a petrolhead (to use the theme of the thread), and hanging out with a group of ‘greenies’ who might consider that we should all go about on pushbikes, or simply walk. You wouldn’t have much in common would you, and conversation would be a bit difficult. Of course these two examples may not necessarily be mutually exclusive, but you get the idea, I’m sure.

Probably best not to take such labels too seriously - after all, what’s the point in going against nature !

Basically, I think a petrolhead could be a term used to describe anyone with an enthusiastic interest in internal combustion engine-powered cars.

Now, what is going to happen in twenty years time, when we are all forced by government to drive electric vehicles ? What will they call motoring enthusiasts then - if there are any !

After a nasty RTA on a BMW R1100RS, I bought a Gilera Runner 180 (2 stroke) to get my confidence back - best fun I’ve ever had with my clothes on!

My love-affair with convertibles (NB, NC and a Peugeot 206CC) started because I realised at 56 that I’d not had a car I really desired since I was 23 - they’d all been just “practical”.

Now, I can’t imagine having another “tintop”.

Mine was silver, with a lovely LOUD race pipe.

It did 95 on the clock, surprised a few people who thought it was a “hairdrier”! :joy:

My 50cc was restricted but hey down a hill I think I got about 38mph! Flying at 16yrs old!

All my mates had FS1Es. They’re a blast from the past.

Ampheads? Interesting.

I worked for a guy once who claimed he was into cars. He bought a used Audi R8 (£40k) for a workhorse and never once had it cleaned.

In my mind that’s someone demonstrating wealth, not a car interest.

In contrast, at that time I had a 7 year old Hyundai Coupe that was immaculate and cherished.

Also mid 30s.
Will get the mx5 undersealed, meisterR coilovers and backbox, seems like a keeper.

I actually enjoy spending time with close friends who fall into the ‘greenie’ category - I will confess to hugging the odd tree myself . How dull life would be if we only made friends with people like ourselves. And since when do interests have to be mutually exclusive ? My schedule today involves finishing a review of a motor sport book( for a US website I write for) before writing a piece on winter birdlife on a local stream for a nature charity - variety is the spice…

As for music… how sad , and wasteful it would be if we didn’t explore different genres now and again, by accident or design . I do know some folk whose taste was defined by the time they 22 and , tragically , they spend the next 40 years listening only to Queen (or whoever) , boasting that nobody makes good music any more - despite not having tried anything new for decades .

Hmm! Interesting comments on music. I agree that different genres are a must and not be a victim to a decade or artist. I range from Mozart to, well anything else I happen to take a shine to. Having a jukebox means I am always changing playlists which currently has some Sinatra and AC/DC. Latest purchases were Whole Lotta Love and All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix

More a buzz than a blast, TBF… :joy:

Agreed. A very distinctive buzz as I recall my mates riding to and from school.
