I have a 2015 ND Sport Nav , but the latter is becoming a misnomer because I really couldn’t be arsed with all the silly faff of updating it. Waze is free, brilliant and updated constantly , so I use it on my iPhone 6S . In my daily driver Yeti I have one of those plastic widgets on an airvent to hold the phone but that wouldn’t work on the MX5’s much smaller vent .
Any ideas ,. from experience please?

Just got one from Halfords , reduced from £20 to £16 with suction cup for screen or dash
I intend using mine for my iPhone 6 mounted on space just in front of card slot
Got round flat adapter at same time which will stick with foam tape(on it) just in case the suction pad doesn’t like the grainy plastic

I ordered one online that is made by a company called Mpow for about £14 a few months ago. Feels very secure and is adjustable by placing phone inside and clicking the claws shut. No issues with this falling off in the cold etc. Phone is Huawei which is slightly bigger (and most likely heavier) than yours. Like you, we much prefer Waze to any in-built sat nav that we have encountered!
CD slot is behind the drivers seat in an ND 
I am not sure when they are getting more in but I keep debating one of these.
Alternatively, you could look at getting Apple Car Play fitted which would enable you to use Waze on the main screen and I believe is now cheaper as discussed in this thread but still a lot more than a phone mount
