MK 3 NC Center air vents 2 Questions

Hello again, Hoping ye can help once again.
1 Are the two center eyeball airvents in teh MK3 supposed to be able to close just like the ones beside the windows ? i.e. press in the button in the middle and the flap closes ?? ( mine dont )
2 Are they easy to pop out. Was easy in my MK1 but not sure on this one the MK3

Thanks in advance

willie
PS just been out for my first longish spin in it since purchase, its so different from the 1990 MK1 I had. Its a cracker really, comfy, quiet, and can go like hell when asked to .

They stay permanently open on all NC models, just the outer vents are push to close. Something about the regs needing permanent ventilation into the cabin.
The dash panel needs to come off as the vents are screwed in from the rear.

Just had my dash panel out. There are instructions out there. It’s pretty easy apart from the 10mm bolt on the side of the head unit. Once you know where it is it’s straightforward. With dash panel off, air vents screw off from the back. Swapped mine for chrome from mx5parts for not too much if I remember correctly

Just to add, the centre and the outer vents are indeed interchangeable so you can get hold of some that close for the middle if you so wish. I replaced my centres so that I could close off both passenger side vents when I’m running solo in the winter and need all the heat the engine can muster over my side of the car.

There’s one more screw holding that long section of dash panel apart from the two behind the upper radio aperture.
Just up under the glovebox opening is a third screw, you’ll need to feel for it remove that then you can prise the panel out.

Rear view of the said screw fixing point
