Anyone done it ? I have had a good search but not found an answer. I’m fed up of the wipers coming on every time I turn left ! All my other cars have indicators on the left stalk.
When did Mazda change ? I’m guessing the Mk2 or Mk3 had indicators on the left - could those stalks be fitted to the Mk 1
Thanks
Dipped Headlights
To save you reading the thread, I did this 2 years ago, reminded driving a standard one recently how annoying the original layout now is. Write up here.
And I thought I was the only one who makes a fool out of myself with the reversed stalks:-)
My problem is driving different cars infrequently.
Unfortunately you are going to have to live with the setup. MK1, MK2 and MK2.5 are all the same. No way AFAIK to easily do the sensible thing with these controls.
Even worse is flashing the headlights and getting a face full of water !
I wonder if another make can be adapted to fit ?
I’m thinking Toyota, I remember the first generation Rav4 had indicators on the right but they moved to the left for second gen around 2001.
Indicators are the main thing, the wipers and lights could always be relocated to near the foglight switch.
I’ve been playing with cars for years but am new to MX5 and am amazed at how much can be done to these awesome little cars - someone must have done this !
Yes it’s a Eunos. That’s good news they were the other way for the UK, a friend has a mid 90s UK MX5 he will soon be breaking for parts, I’ll have a look at his and pull the cover off to compare with mine, sounds like that should be easy to swop. Thanks.
Just checked the manual and yes, it shows on the LHD cars the stalks are the other way, the unit that bolts on to the steering wheel looks like it’s mirrored. I’m in the USA next month (Los Angeles area) so should be able to find one, if it all works I’ll report back !
All my pre-1970 (ish) cars (GM, Ford Rootes and BMC) had indicators on the right, wiper-switch on the dashboard and dip on the floor beside the clutch pedal. It was dead easy to break the 1961 Mini traveller’s indicator stalk with ones knee when entering the car. The 1972 FE Victor Estate (outstanding road holding, but appallingly bad brakes) had two stalks with indicators, dip, flash, and horn on the right stalk and wipers and wash on the left. So it was somewhat confusing with the Mk1 Cavalier (1977) which had modern switching while still driving the old style Mini and Victor.
The Victor was great because one could flash headlights and sound the horn simultaneously with just one finger while still holding the steering wheel in both hands.
I think the right hand indicator position was because so many cars had the option of column gear-change on the left of the wheel to allow bench seats front and back.
No Eunos or UK spec MK1(1989 - 98) has indicators on the left. All miatas do but extra US only functions and probably a different connector plug. They also had more early cars with airbags and the prices on ebay.com are very high!
I was also wrong about the UK spec MK2.5 which does have the indicators on the left hand side but the connector plug is totally different and there are other fitting problems - steering column diameter and fixing positions.
I would suggest that an early Miata may work with a bodge of the connector - see ebay link…
Thanks. I’ve got some car contacts in the Los Angeles area so I will see what they can find, like you say Ebay prices look very high.
I know from talking to people there in the past there don’t really have the same culture as us of bangers and breaking at the bottom end of the car price chain, part of it is because they are incentiveised by income tax rebates to donate anything worth less than about $1000 to charity (where it is scrapped).
There are breakers yards but like here a Mk1 Miata would be too old for them now.
