MK1 - the bit below the stereo

Hi, im new and have looked and cant find any answer to this so…

I have just got a MK1 Dakar, and below the stereo on the right there is a headlamp dip switch, and to the left just a big blank panel. (ive attached a pic which you can kind of see it on)

I was wondering if you can get a clock to put in the big panels place as I notice there is no clock in the car

Hi, there is normally a small compartment under the stereo, yours seems to have been blanked off. You can get an mx5 clock with a small compartment next to it or a bmw E36 clock fits perfectly ( you can find them off ebay)Big Smile.

Hope that is of some help.Fishy

one of the two blanking plates contains wiring for the optional dash dimmer.  Pop them out with a flat-bladed screwdriver to check which it is.

You could always fill it with one of these:

That’s the row of three switches to the RIGHT of the steering wheel Smile

I did this…you could use a different clock if you wanted and put it where the left hand blanking plate is used for the electric mirrors on other models:

The BMW clock/cubby solution does not work too well on UK models as it leaves an irritating gap of about 1cm that needs to be filled with something. You would also have to relocate the headlight levelling switch.

Mine has a square clock, which fits in where the blanking plate is in yours.

And where did that clock come from?

Got mine off eBay…fitted to some special editions…come up from time to time but go for quite strong money.

I would assume the clock was there when the car was new…

Technically, thats all Japanese and UK 1996+ plus, as these both used a slightly different radio rurround. You can fit a radio surround from an earlier car (and then fit the steel clock plate solde by SFT), but you’ll end up with a non-flush fitting radio.

Mine came out of a Renault 19 (about £10 on eBay)

Done a quick search on ebay :

Thank you!

This is what I was after!

Mine looks like this now!

That looks excellent.  I found this via google (before I ventured into the forums); I too have been looking for a clock and the Renault 19 one seems just right (although the prices are now around the £20 mark).
My big concern was the wiring…what did you have to do to install yours?  I assume these clocks are the plug-in types so I was hoping someone could tell me what goes where (I can’t find a picture of the rear of the clock anywhere).
What colour is the backlight?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve

If I remember correctly, the Renault 19 clock has 3 pins on the back.

+12 v, grnd & backlight. I probably wired into the radio wiring for +12v & grnd and ashtray light for backlight

If you get the clock & cant work out the connections drop me a pm (I wired mine in about 8 years ago!)

I think the colour of backlight is orange

Hope that helps

Peter

@ Peter,

Well I finally got a Renault 19 clock of the bay and it does indeed have 3 pins on the back…one slightly separated from the other 2 in a configuration like this

    |     |  |      (sideways view as it’s not easy to draw!).   But of course there are no indications onthe clock as to what pin is what.  The seller on eBay could not help and a google search has so far been fruitless.  Before I start trawling the library for a Renault 19 haynes manual, can you remember what is what?

Steve

One will  be a earth, one will be to light it up, and the other will be 12 v live to power the clock.

You can tap into the headunit loom for them all.

Hi Steve

OK, I’ve just checked the connections on the back of my Renault 19 clock.

Using your configuration: |   | |   the connections are : +12v, back light, ground.

I connected the back light to the ashtray wiring. The +12v & ground into the radio wiring.

Hope that helps, good luck

Peter
