I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Driver door trim rattle
Good Evening,
My drivers door trim panel rattles/squeaks at the extreme top right corner- see photographs
The trim is correctly installed with all new attachemnt buttons and all correct screws at the door pull x2 and internal door latch.
Ive had the panel off on multiple occasions to attach foam strip at the back in the suspect area, all to no avail.
Ive now removed it all as it wasn’t doing anything and attached the door trim panel per factory fit.
Today at start up the rattle was there, if I pressed the panel at the centre of the photo it stopped!
Then after driving the car for 15 to 20 minutes it miraculously stopped,!!! Then after parking up it came back to a lesser extent.
Help please its driving me crackers!! Could it be somthing expanding and contracting??
Thanks
Regards
Nic Cox
It’s most likely connected to the weather strip across the top of the door. I’ve had 2 MX-5’s that rattled top right on the door cards, it was a worn weather strip.
Ok today I’ve been out in the MX5 and the door trim rattle/squeak is still there. Its on the drivers door at the top right which when pressed in stops!
Both door trims have been off to overhaul the window motors and mechanisms. As I have said previously all the trim attachment clips have been replaced.
The pax door is perfect yet the drivers door trim still rattles!
Help.
Thanks
Nic
Hello All,
Drivers door trim sqeak continued!
Having failed to fix the problem Ive bit the bullet and fitted a replacement drivers door card!
All to no avail, again on start up and intial driving the sqeak remains, but stops after a few hundred yards and a few speed bumps.
I now think it could be the contact between the door sealing rubber and the hood drain rail rubber where it finishes at the B post?
I’m about to change the door sealing rubber to see if this helps!
Any thoughts on the possible cause? As I’ve said before the pax door card has been off on a number of occasions and doesn’t sqeak when its reinstalled?
At the end of my teather now as I’m sure you’ll understand!
Regards
Nic
Quick update on the above.
Ive now removed the B Pillar Post Top Cap from the drivers side and hey presto the sqeaking has finally stopped!
It now appears the sqeak is as a result of rubber rubbing between the Top Cap and the Door Seal at the top right hand corner of the door with it closed.
I would appreciate comments on what to do next- can the rubber be refreshed in some way or is it worth replacing both items?
The door fits its apperture perfectly so adjustment isn’t necessary in my view.
Evening Malc,
Quick update, I got the Rubber Care Stick via Amazon.
I cleaned the rubber seals on the door and top of the B post with white spirit. After drying I applied two coats to each mating faces before replacing the B post top cap.
Bad news- the rubber squeak continues worst than ever!
Process of elimination - now I now the noise ceases with the B post top cap removed, ive bought some draught excluder tape and will experiment further to stop it.
Thanks
Nic
Good Evening All,
After a great deal of angst and much experimentation as described above, Ive finally traced the source of the Rub/Squeak.
Its caused by the outside face of the B Post Top Cap Cover (the plastic part) and the top of the Rubber Door to Body Seal!
By putting a piece of self adhesive draught insulation tape on the outside face of the Plastic Top Cap it thankfully stops.

Nic
Hi Dave,
I used a self adhesive foam draught excluder fro screwfix- see attached photo. I wrapped it around the plastic B post top cover and hey presto noise gone.
