NC Drivers window rattle

Hi,

I have a window rattle on the drivers door of my NC, it only occurs when the window is fully up. When it is lowered, it lessens or goes completely when fully lowered. I have seen a few posts elsewhere regarding bolts holding the runners being loose, but these must be behind the door card. Before I embark on tackling removing the door card etc. off, is this a common issue and easily resolved.

Many thanks.

You can replace the weather strip across the top of the door. That’s the part that the window slides up and down on.
Constant use and maybe using the glass to push on to close the door has made it loose when in the fully closed position hood down. Mx5parts used to have them maybe still do but you would have to ring them for info. Failing that try the dealer, or my fix was…

Remove the door card (you’ll need to anyway to replace the strip) remove the strip. You will see there’s a rubber strip running the length of the seal, the part the window slides against. This rubber strip is hollow, I pushed some curtain wire (the white plastic coated stuff) down the strip and siliconed the ends up. The result, it packed out that rubber strip which went flat with use, cleaned it all up treated the rubber and the window goes up and down nicely and no more rattles👍 Cost, zero just my time as I already had the curtain wire.
Just take care when removing the end clips from door top, the can be brittle and snap.

Many thanks MickAP, ill get onto it tomorrow. Sounds like a probable cause, and one which can easily be resolved. Thanks again for your advice, very much appreciated.

mine does it with the roof down, if you lower it half an inch or so, seems to stop it.
had a look behind the door card when changed the locks, and there was nothing obviously loose or adjustable. the rubber trick might work - let us know.

Hi Mike,

Mine is the same, rattles with the roof down, so maybe earlier advice may not solve the issue. I’ll have the door card of and have a root about to see what I can find. Many thanks for your thoughts on this. Best wishes.

might be worth getting a few spare clips for the door card, they are quite fragile, one of mine was missing completely

I have fed the net wire up my drivers side strip without taking anything apart. I just squirted WD up the channel and fed the wire up until it stopped. I then used pliers to push it on in about half an inch at a time until I was happy it was in the full length. Easy.

Apologies for resurrecting an older thread. I have the similar window rattle, driver’s side on my NC when the roof is down but window up. I have seen that the horizontal weather seal on the outside of the car (window to door body) has a gap in it which increases as it goes towards the back of the door, but I think everyone else has been looking on the inside of the window. Can that outside weather seal be changed to achieve a tighter fit?

Different car same problem, that was my old NC (now sold) I had to fix the window rattle. Now we have the newer NC it has quickly developed the window rattle.
Talking to Mrs A on our trip out only yesterday (I need some more curtain wire) she has produced a short length of it this morning.

I’ll post up what happened but like Davy’s remedy better, probably less faff.:+1:

I’d appreciate a couple of photos of the process if you don’t mind.

Using Davy_F method above it was easier.:+1:

Previously I’d gone to the trouble of removing the door card, no need to unless you want to completely remove that top weather strip.

So as Davy says, feed the Flexi curtain rod into the end of the rubber strip, it’ll need an helping hand, mine was more flat than round. I squirted some silicon spray in the gap and for good measure used some vaseline on the rod too. You’ll get the rod approximately halfway then as Davy_F says resort to a pair of pliers to ease it inch by inch the rest of the way. I poked it finally home with bradawl.
My rod was slightly shorter than the length of the rubber strip (it’s all I had left) nevertheless it did the job👍

Not drove the car yet to find out if the window rattle has stopped, it worked on the other NC that had the same treatment.

The photos were so helpful! Thank you for that. Curtain rod ordered

Sorry, but I had a look at mine and I don’t get it. When it is inserted, is the it slightly visible if you look down? That’s the only place I saw that the rod can be entered…

If you look down at the black weather strip on the top of the door you will see the part of the seal that the glass contacts, around 15-20mm down from the top of the strip. Best viewed first off with the window part way down gives you an idea which part contacts the glass. Once located drop the window fully down and feed the curtain rod in.
I’ve poked a bradawl into the opening to show in the pic below. It’s more of a slit than a rounded hole at the end of the seal.

BTW I had a little run round the block in mine yesterday after washing the car, went over some rough roads, no rattle evident from the door glass.:+1:

Aha! I found it. Thank you so much for taking that photo :+1:

Can confirm, the curtain wire fix worked a treat in mine, rattle gone.:+1:

Thanks Mick, I raised this around a year ago as it was really irritating, as I could not work out how to stop it, After taking the door card out, rattling everything I could to identify the problem without success, I saw your post a couple of weeks ago. Finally got round to doing it today, I used a piece of 2mm earth wire, rather than buy curtain wire, which went in easy with a pair of long nose pliers. Put the roof down and took it over as many bumps as I could find, not one rattle! Thanks so much for saving my sanity.

I am not sure it’s in the correct place there is almost a fold and slid it under there it went in so easy I’m thinking it’s not right as it was literally a few seconds job.

I’ll take it out later and see if I got it in the right place or was being an idiot.
