    I’ve just bought a 2006 1.8 mk3 and wondering what does the media button on the radio actually do?
    The handbook identifies it if a mini disc player is fitted but I don’t have one of those on mine.
    If I press the button, nothing appears to happen so what does it do? Can I connect my phone to it somehow?

Assuming you have the standard head unit (non-Bose), you’re right - it does nothing on its own.

However you can spend £5 on a cable that goes into the back of it and allows you to connect your phone via auxiliary cable.

I spent another £20 on an Anker Bluetooth module so I’ve now got Bluetooth hands free, music etc… Works really well!
