Mk4 mods

Where did you get it from? It does not look like the MX5 Parts one. Does it require any drilling and screw fixing to install and does it work more effectively than the standard item? Cheers.

Got it from here Acrylic Wind Blocker with logo options – MX5things

Check out his site, he has a lot of other mods here Blog | Gadgets for my MX-5 Miata (ND)

Not from MX5 parts, comes from America.  Had to pay an extra £24 in handling costs when it arrived, but that was for all 3 items.

No drilling, the side pieces provided are sufficent for the task. No movement so far.

Wether it is better than the MX5 parts one, cant say as i have never tried one. I think it is better than the standard one.

Nothing done on mine but the two worst faults - by far - are the excessively large and slippery rimmed steering wheel and godawful steering feel . Or rather , almost total lack of the same. Oh for a 13or 14 inch Momo and steering that talks to me…

For ours last year we have:

  • The official Mazda boot liner
  • The official luxury mats
  • The official alu pedals
  • MXParts stubby aerial - the radio still works surprisingly well
  • The clear plastic windblocker that Snowman linked to
  • The underneath of the car has been covered in dinitrol
  • Had some leather luggage made to max out boot space on a trip
Still do to this year:
  • Fit the official sill protectors
  • Fit the footwell lighting kit and change the other interior lights to LED
  • Swap the alloys for something lighter and a bit wider when the tyres need replacing. Upgrade for stickier tyres at the same time
  • Fit the lowering springs and get the alignment done once the wheels are sorted
  • After the warranty runs out next year get either the BBR 200 or 250 kit fitted, need to decide if I want the turbo or not
I'd like to replace the seats with something better, but its not a priority and may not get round to it.

Fitted the mx5 things replacement led rear indicators, to took about 5 minutes tops  Now I can pretend to be an audi! Also got their phone mount that fits the front cup holder, which is a perfect fit.

“Pretend to be an Audi”. Does that mean you are not going to use them?

Audi fitting them to their range was the single biggest thing they ever did for safety  as now your typical Audi driver uses their indicators to show them off!

Good point! Perhaps BMW should follow suit!

Quite a lot of you guys have the Zunsport half grille. I’ve looked at the videos on th Zunsport website and both half and full look decent. I’m interested as to why you guys favour the half grill version?

Personally, I prefer the half because of the shape of the original plastic grille that it fits on to.  The original grille has a wide section at the top with an angled cutout on either side and a place for the front number plate.  It’s shiny and doesn’t look like something that is meant to be covered up.  Below that, however, the horizontal bars are quite narrow and more recessed.

Convenient picture I found:

The bottom space just seems to be a more natural hole to cover with a finer mesh.  The bars are less obvious and the spacing between them is quite wide so some radiator protection seems like a good idea.  Whereas the bit at the top (IMO) doesn’t need a mesh in front of it (because it’s mostly solid, and shiny) and I think it might even look a bit off to have the mesh over the top of such a solid, wide bit of shiny plastic with very little reason for a mesh to be there.

[edit]

These pictures sort of show what I’m trying to say.

(top one is actually a zymex grille, but it looks much the same as the zunsport - minus the logo)

See how you can still see the top bar quite clearly through the full mesh?  Personally I don’t like that as much as the half mesh just filling the lower opening and leaving the top area exposed.  It just seems to work better IMO.

I have the half grille in black on my Soul Red ND for the same reasons as Enjay.

Thanks guys, that makes complete sense now. I haven’t decided whether to fit one yet, Ive only had the car since Friday but have done 250 miles already and blooming love it. Stubby arial is on order following seeing the original long one whipping about in the wind. I am a bit of a tweaker with vehicles but can’t see much to do on mine as its so lovely. I’ve got a Soul Red Sport Nav convertible. Probably the official shirt step plate sill protectors and I really fancy the reversing camera idea though I will see how much Mazda want to fit it as mine still has 12 months warranty left.

Bertiebot I would definitely recommend fitting sill protectors, also think about mats, cheaper to replace when worn than the entire fitted carpet, I have Mazda fabric for summer and excellent heavy-duty rubber ones from MX-5 Parts for winter.

Thanks for the tip. My car came with proper Mazda mats but the sill protectors look nice

I just this week went for the half-grille.  I wanted to retain the standard appearance of the car but with the cooling aperture being relatively low, and the bars being so widely spaced, I decided it was worth having some protection even if stone damage is a rare event.

Appearance-wise if you go for black, full/half doesn’t make much difference IMO.

As you probably know, you will need to make holes in the original grille to fit a Zunsport.

If you go for full, you might well end up drilling more holes for the number plate if the existing ones don’t coincide sufficiently well with the holes in the mesh.

Regarding fitting, I drilled 1mm pilot holes for the quite small screws provided.  Just forcing them into the fairly thin plastic of the original grille as implied by the fitting instructions seemed a bit messy/risky to me.  But I tend to overthink these things.

The top hook was reluctant to engage.  I opened it up slightly, it wasn’t a problem.

Appearance:

Apparently I over think things too. I didn’t like the screws just gripping on to the plastic so I put those “nuts” designed for self tapping screws on the back too.

These sort of things:

I don’t remember if I had some flat ones available or if I just used U shaped ones like these and squashed them with the pressure from the screw.

As for mats, mine also came with Mazda mats but, interestingly, with my car being an RF, the mats actually say MX-5 RF and not just MX-5. However, I haven’t found anyone selling mats like that yet in case I need/want to get some spares. I guess the dealer would have them though.

I’ll probably get the sill guards too.

Oh, one “mod” that you might consider (especially if you think you’ll be keeping the car for a long time) is to get it fully undersealed.  I know that’s hardly a bling mod but the Mazda rustproofing on the ND is… how shall I put it?.. minimal?

I got mine professionally done by Preserve and Protect in Johnstone (Glasgow) with Dinitrol products.  Great job and I’m much more confident about my car’s ability to cope with what a UK winter might throw at it.

The MX5 Restorer did mine.  It must make sense to attend to it before it actually goes rusty.
